The X 218 was originally planned to premiere at NYIAS 2012, but it eventually skipped the North American motor show due to the fact the list of new Mercedes-Benz models was alreay overcrowded with three SUVs: the new GL, the G-Class and the GLK. Beijing auto salon was another 'no go', as the Concept Style Coupe had polarized the entire media attention. So the company officials were left with a single rescue option: the new CLS Shooting Brake will make a stage appearance at the end of June, during this year's famous Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS).

As the CLS did in 2004, this new niche model from Stuttgart will give birth to a new automotive class and will certainly cause some controversy, in addition to receiving public admiration. Prototypes have already lost most of their exterior camouflage, so the outer design is predictably very similar to the concept car from 2010. Underneath, the Shooting Brake shares all its technical components with the CLS Coupe version. The choice of powerplants consists of BlueEFFICIENCY units, with peak output ranging from 204 hp up to 408 hp. The top version, scheduled for a late 2012 release, will be the CLS 63 AMG SB variant, using the current 5.5-litre V8 BITURBO engine cranking out 525 hp and 760 Nm. Expect a complete safety assistance package, as well as the latest in-car communication technologies. According to rumors, the base price for an entry-level CLS Shooting Brake should begin at around 65,000 euros and approximately 120,000 if you opt for the AMG model.
