The German newspaper Der Spiegel published today, on the official website, a set of spy pictures that showcase a series version of the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA with no exterior camouflage whatsoever, that was taking part in a pre-launch press photo shooting. The captures were shot in Iceland by a watchful citizen, from a considerable distance from the car, which was parked in front of what seems to be a local authorized Mercedes-Benz center.

The Mercedes-Benz personnel in charge of this CLA-Class model had, among other duties, the obligation of keeping an eye on the car and the immediate surrounding area, in order to avoid early leaks like this, which can ruin the official launch. Most probably, they were unaware of the fact the undisguised CLA could eventually catch the attention of near-by passers and felt too confident no person will ever attempt to take the picture of the new Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Proof is they were wrong and for that they may well be severely penalised.

A conclusion draws after examining the photos. The new CLA, though softened in terms of design, borrows a lot from the Concept Style Coupe and is also fairly similar to the A-Class as well. The athletic lines of the showcar have been toned town, but the CLS-esque coupe impression has been preserved. The car appears to have some compact proportions as well, even though it is expected to be slightly longer compared to the A-Class.

It is worth mentioning the pictured model could well be the range-topping CLA 250 SPORT with 211 hp, in AMG Sports Package visual trim with the striking diamond grille and the multi-spoke dark-tinted alloy wheels. The front end is a reinterpretation of the faces we have seen on the latest prototypes dedicated to sketching Merc's future compact class family of vehicles. The details, such as the headlights, the radiator grille and the air intakes, boast a sharp, distinctive and aggressive styling that sets the CLA-Class apart from its hatchback sibling.

The side profile consists of two, heavily pronounced character lines that might help balance the bulky look or worsen the situation, depending on the angle this model is admired from. Most probably, it will take us some time to fully digest this unprecedented design at Mercedes-Benz. High quality photos should do more justice to the car.

The way the rear end is styled brings added balance to the dynamic appearance of the CLA. The tail lamps seem fairly close to what we have already seen on the Concept Style Coupe. At night, those impressive LED lights will definitely offer an astonishing sight.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is expected to bow in late 2012 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Starting spring 2013, the car will be available for sale on the U.S. and European markets at a very attractive price. The engine range will comprise diesel and petrol powerplants fitted with BlueEFFICIENCY technology for low consumption and CO2 emissions. After the middle of next year, the high-performance CLA 45 AMG with 4x4 traction and around 350 hp will also be released.

Use the 'CLA', 'cla-class' and 'C 117' to ease your search for articles related to the new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class on our website. In the mean time, take your time and watch the most recent spy video that features a camouflaged test prototype of the CLA spotted on a Hungarian highway. Enjoy!
