Mercedes-Benz will premiere its fourth premium compact class model this autumn: the GLA arrives in serial production form at the IAA Frankfurt, after the concept car is unveiled next month at Shanghai. The Cross Activity Vehicle, as it is entitled by the constructor, is intended to be a lifestyle crossover with SUV visual attributes and enhanced dynamics. The AMG model follows in spring 2014.

The latest spy photos featuring the GLA 45 AMG were shot near the Nürburgring track, where the sports crossover was heading for some high-speed tweaking. Compared to the standard version, the Affalterbach-prepped GLA-Class is set apart by the revised exterior package, which includes the specific front bumper with generous air inlets, the lowered clearance (through the high-performance suspension system), bespoke alloy wheels with large diameter and outrageous quad exhaust pipes.

The new GLA 45 AMG completes the new compact model portfolio by joining the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG. The car runs on a front-biased 4x4 powertrain (67:33) which works together with M133 2.0-litre 360 hp unit and the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox to deliver an outstanding level of performance. The AMG RIDE CONTROL, the 3-stage ESP and the specially tuned components and system of the new model further improve dynamics and safety aboard the GLA 45 AMG.

SPY: New 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (X 156) and GLA 45 AMG scooped during winter testing

The new GLA-Class will be Merc's fourth addition to the expanding portfolio of premium compact cars. The car is expected to make the official debut next year, around spring. The latest spy shots come from the Northern Scandinavia, where the German constructor deployed an entire fleet of compact crossover for the usual cold weather development programme.

Visually, the GLA-Class is nothing than an A-Class on steroids. Hardly resembling the G-Class (given the root of its name), the X 156 project is intended to be more of a lifestyle crossover than capable off-roader, even though most equipment variants feature 4x4 traction as standard. The bigger wheel arches, with pronounced edges, the higher ground clearance, the muscular shoulders and the more impressive front and rear fascias underline the car's natural dynamic character.

We expect the new GLA-Class to be quite as long as the new CLA, which got previewed last week at Detroit. The new crossover from Stuttgart should also be more spacious inside compared to the A-Class, given its exterior dimensions. Other than that, the GLA is technically identical to its brothers. The front-driven MFA platform will be standard on entry-level variants, while the newly developed, front-biased 4MATIC system will be available on high-end versions, such as the GLA 250 with 211 hp. Moreover, the entire package of technological solutions oriented to safety, telecommunications, comfort and ride dynamics will be borrowed from the A-Class and CLA-Class.

Given the success of the A-Class and the good reaction to the special AMG SPORT visual package, the new GLA-Class will also be available with the outstanding Diamond grille and the bespoke styling familiar from Affalterbach models until the new GLA 45 AMG arrives in late 2014. Like the soon-to-be-revealed A 45 AMG or the upcoming CLA 45 AMG, the high-performance version of the SUV will use the latest 2.0-litre gasoline engine with turbocharging rated at 354 hp, developing a massive torque of 450 Nm, and the PERFORMANCE 4MATIC all-wheel-drive sports traction specially engineered for remarkable dynamics.

SPY: First encounter with the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG (X 156)

Mercedes-Benz is showcasing the will to become the most competent expert in the premium compact class. No less than five distinct models are planned on the basis of the A-Class and B-Class. In January, next year we shall see the first glimpse of the new CLA and, one year later, the GLA crossover will also be unveiled. Mercedes-AMG is also involved in the game and it is currently prepping its new army of tremendous weapons. After the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG, both slated to appear in the course of 2013, the GLA 45 AMG is also expected to arrive some time towards the end of 2014.

These are the very first scoops which confirm the X 156 rocket has been officially greenlighted for mass production. The car has recently made the premier walk outside the Affalterbach labs and has been spotted wandering around in a German town. The hints that suggest this is an early development vehicle for the GLA 45 AMG are the alloy wheels with clear AMG styling, the double exhausts and the revised front apron, hidden under the camouflage.

The so-entitled SUV of the new compact class range by Mercedes-Benz will receive the same special treatment as the forthcoming A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG: a modified 4x4 traction derived from the standard 4MATIC will ensure maximum dynamism through its fixed 33:67 front-rear ratio, whereas the 2.0-litre turbocharged unit rated at 354 hp and the special AMG sports transmission with double clutch will complete the technical package of the new model. Of course, the high-performance braking system and the suspension management assistant will also be offered, alongside other dedicated ride controlling programs.
