BBS Brandner Bus Schwaben in Günzburg has added three Setra S 417 UL intercity coaches to its fleet. The new Setra MultiClass 400 vehicles are already equipped with Euro VI engines – this means that the Swabian bus company is already relying on drive technology today that will not be prescribed by law until 2014. The three-axle coaches will help the company, which has been a Setra partner for many years, to assume a pioneering role in terms of the environmental compatibility of its regular bus services in the districts of Günzburg, Neu-Ulm, Augsburg-Land and Unterallgäu. "As a future-oriented company, we consider it self-evident that we should have the latest bus technology in our fleet as standard", said Managing Director Josef Brandner at the official handover of the coaches at the Ulm-based Daimler brand's customer centre in Neu-Ulm: "Our passengers can depend on being able to travel in the most environmentally compatible buses that are currently available on the market for this segment." The three S 417 UL models seat 61 passengers and are equipped with the in-line, six-cylinder OM 470 engines from the newly developed MB Blue Efficiency Power engine series. The powerful 265-kW (360-hp) engine with a displacement of 10.7 litres already meets the Euro VI emissions standard today, and guarantees its operators a high level of economic efficiency, thanks to its long service life and low consumption of fuel, AdBlue and engine oil.

The grandfather of the current managing director, Josef Brandner, started the first regular bus services back in 1926. Euro VI emission standards do not have to mean increased fuel consumption. To that end Mercedes-Benz and Setra employ a multitude of countermeasures. As a result of these measures, the new Euro VI-certified Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban regular-service bus and the new Setra ComfortClass 500 touring coach series actually use measurably less fuel than their predecessor models. Now they must prove that fact in the Record Run Buses 2012: between 22 and 26 October 2012 three Citaro buses and two Setra ComfortClass touring coaches will cover a combined distance of some 20,000 kilometres during comparative drives under impartial supervision.Five buses to operate around the clock for five days straight
Start and finish line for the three Mercedes-Benz Citaros and the two Setras of the ComfortClass is Wiesbaden, the capital of the German state of Hesse, at around noon on 22 October 2012. With the exception of two refuelling stops each day, the five buses will operate around the clock for five days straight.
Three Citaros to run in urban regular service in Wiesbaden
For the urban bus comparison the new Euro VI-certified Mercedes-Benz Citaro will compete as a standard bus with OM 936 h engine and 220 kW (299 hp) against its predecessor. The Euro V Citaro starts in two versions: powered by the OM 906 hLA engine and 210 kW (286 hp) of power and the OM 457 hLA engine (220 kW/299 hp). All Citaros will operate in regular service on the demanding route 17 in Wiesbaden – however, loaded with ballast in place of passengers. The buses will complete about 20 round trips of the 18.6-km route daily; the buses will stop at each bus stop.
Two Setras to complete 1800 km on motorways each day
In the touring coach comparison the Euro VI-certified Setra ComfortClass S 515 HD will compete against its Setra ComfortClass S 415 GT-HD predecessor. The two-axle high-deck touring coaches each measure a little over 12 metres in length. The ComfortClass S 515 HD is powered by the OM 470 engine with 315 kW (428 hp). Its OM 457 LA predecessor in the ComfortClass S 415 GT-HD has the identical power output.
The touring coaches will use Wiesbaden as the starting point for a trip to Leipzig. From there they will make a loop via Erfurt, Schweinfurt, Bayreuth, Dresden to Bautzen and back during daytime. At night they will drive a route that leads from Leipzig via Potsdam to Hamburg and back. The touring coaches will each cover a distance of some 1800 km in 24 hours.
Identical conditions, technology and refuelling stops monitored
Loads, transmissions, final drive ratios as well as tyre brand and tread depth are identical within the respective model series. All buses will have been broken in at the start of the Record Run Buses 2012 with around 10,000 km on the odometer. The buses will be driven by skilled test drivers as well by trainers from Omniplus Ecotraining.
The test vehicles and their operations will be monitored by Dekra, an independent specialist automotive organisation. All components relevant to fuel consumption as well as the fuel tanks will be sealed; all refuelling stops will be monitored. The buses are equipped with instruments for measuring fuel consumption. Any movements can be monitored with the help of the FleetBoard telematics system.
Arrival at the finish line in Wiesbaden after 20,000 km on 26 October 2012
All five buses will cross the finish line of the Record Run Buses 2012 in Wiesbaden around midday on 26 October 2012. By that time the touring coaches will each have covered a distance of some 9000 km, the urban regular-service buses each just shy of 1500 km. A good two years before the new EURO 6 European emissions standard is due to come into effect for all petrol-engined vehicles on 1.9.2014, the petrol engines of the new Mercedes-Benz A and B-Class have been confirmed as already meeting the required emission limits. More specifically, the engines also already undercut the particulate limits which are being introduced for the first time for petrol engines. Recoding of models which have already been delivered will also be possible."With this advance compliance, Mercedes-Benz is once again highlighting its pioneering role when it comes to the environmental acceptability of its vehicles", explains Dr. Thomas Weber, Board Member responsible for Group Research and Development for Mercedes-Benz Cars. "With our diesel vehicles too, since as early as 2009 we have had an increasing number of models on the market which already meet the EURO 6 diesel requirements which will apply from 2014." Mercedes-Benz also played a pioneering role in the automotive industry by reducing nitrogen oxide in the exhaust emissions of diesel passenger cars and trucks with the introduction of BlueTEC technology.
Thanks to advanced Mercedes-Benz technology, the direct-injection petrol engines in the A 180, A 200 and A 250, as well as in the corresponding models in the B-Class, have succeeded in undercutting the new standard since start of production, and as such even undercut the extremely strict particle number limit of 6 x 1011 per km, which will not become compulsory until the second stage of EURO 6 from 2017. For vehicles produced from August 2012 (B-Class: September), this will be documented in the vehicle documentation (COC/Certificate of Conformity). Vehicles produced earlier can be appropriately recoded. Customers will be contacted so that they can obtain a new COC document along with manufacturer confirmation from their Mercedes-Benz service partner.
On 29 May 2012, the European Commission published Directive 459/2012, establishing the EURO 6 emission regulations for vehicles with petrol engines from 2014 for Stage 1, and from 2017 for Stage 2. The new specification stipulates that in the future, petrol models will also have to meet the strict particulate limits of 6 x 1011 particles per kilometre..jpg)
