David Coulthard will line up on the grid for the final time as a DTM driver at the DTM season finale in Hockenheim (19th to 21st October 2012). The former Formula 1 driver is ending his DTM career after three seasons and 33 races in order to concentrate more on his role as a Formula1 expert and commentator for the BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, in addition to his other personal and business interests. The 41-year-old Scot has been employed in that capacity at Formula 1 races since 2009 and his opinions are valued by TV audiences and fellow pundits. Coulthard will remain part of the Mercedes-Benz family as an AMG brand ambassador. He has been busy in this role at press and customer events since 2011, answering queries and chatting with guests. In addition, he has supported AMG’s development team in certain test activities. Formula 1 World Championship runner-up in 2001, Coulthard moved to the DTM for the 2010 season and was immediately a big hit with fans. He secured his first DTM point at the 2010 season finale competing at Shanghai’s street circuit, where he posted the fastest lap. In the 32 DTM races that the Scot has contested so far, he has secured 16 points and twice posted fastest race lap. He was in third place on the second row of the grid in Valencia last year. Coulthard achieved his best DTM result of the season with fifth place in the season’s showpiece event at the Norisring.
From 1994-2008, Coulthard contested 246 Formula 1 races prior to joining the world’s most popular touring car series. He achieved twelve of his 13 Grand Prix wins in a McLaren Mercedes, including the first victory in the new Silver Arrow era on the 9th March 1997 in Melbourne, Australia. Coulthard, along with team-mate Mika Häkkinen, won the Constructors’ Championship for McLaren Mercedes in 1998, and was runner-up in the world championship in 2001.
For years now, Coulthard has campaigned unstintingly for the Wings for Life Foundation. In his capacity as ambassador, he is a major force in driving the initiative forward worldwide, generating funds for research projects with his hard work. The nationally recognised, not-for-profit foundation was set up in 2004 by Heinz Kinigadner and Dietrich Mateschitz and promotes research into finding a cure for paraplegia caused by spinal cord injuries.

The Australian golf player and Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador Adam Scott will be playing this week in the 141st Open Championship – the world's oldest golf tournament, and the only major not held on US soil. And for the second consecutive year, Mercedes-Benz will be there as “Official Car of the Open Championship”. As a highlight in the lead-up to the event, Mercedes-Benz racing driver David Coulthard surprised Adam Scott with a drive in the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, due to celebrate its world premiere in a few days' time. During a quick spin through the picturesque Lancashire countryside, the duo talked about their two shared passions: Mercedes-Benz cars and golf. “It was fantastic. What a surprise to be picked up by David Coulthard and driven out to the golf course. Just to spend some time with him, what he had to say and listen to him talk about driving”, said Adam Scott with enthusiasm.
Then Adam Scott had to take his leave to continue training for the Open, giving David Coulthard some time to pay a visit to the historic Royal Lytham & St Anne's Golf Club.
David Coulthard was impressed by the new CLS Shooting Brake: “I love the fact that Mercedes-Benz are always coming out with new concepts. And I think the CLS Shooting Brake as a concept works. Because you have something which is very sporty looking, but equally it can be used for everyday driving. And of course it has the space that you want in this type of class of car.”
The absolute skill of Formula 1™ legend and DTM driver David Coulthard, behind the wheel of the awesome 571hp SLS AMG Roadster, provided the ultimate ‘did that really happen?’ moment for Mercedes-Benz United Kingdom. Captured on film which was released today, http://www.youtube.com/mercedesbenzuk , the SLS AMG Roadster landed the record of ‘farthest golf shot to be caught in a moving car, ever’. Professional golfer Jake Shepherd hit a golf ball at 178mph into the Mercedes-Benz supercar, which was moving at a rate of 120 mph when it caught the ball 275 meters away from the tee. The extraordinary film shows the exact moment when David Coulthard caught the speeding golf ball between the seats of the SLS AMG Roadster. Speaking about the astonishing catch, Coulthard said: “The only way to track the ball was to keep your eyes on it all the time: it’s a real adrenaline rush but it’s not the most comfortable thing to do because for a moment, you’re not watching the road!” He continued: “I was as happy as I’ve ever been winning a Grand Prix because I was so surprised quite frankly that it went in, and went in so solidly!” The amazing feat was not only caught on camera, but also independently verified by a Guinness World Record adjudicator who confirmed the unbelievable achievement secured the title of farthest golf shot caught in a moving car. David George, Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars Marketing Director, added: “The SLS AMG Roadster is an extraordinary car so we wanted to do something extraordinary with it to celebrate our association with the upcoming Open Championship, and what better way than to break a world record and create such an exciting film!”
