Pascal Wehrlein: Youngest DTM driver of all time leaves Formula 3 with three podiums

I. Ex-Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher will not be lining up for Mercedes-Benz in the DTM during the 2013 season. Schumacher will remain a member of the Mercedes-Benz family, however, when he assumes his management role at RSC Mücke Motorsport where he is tasked primarily with supporting and bringing on young DTM drivers Pascal Wehrlein and Daniel Juncadella. This latest step in Schumacher’s career after ending his involvement with the DTM as a driver was mutually agreed after Schumacher requested talks with Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Toto Wolff and Gerhard Ungar, Technical Director and Chief Executive Officer at HWA AG.

During the last five years, Germany’s third most successful Formula 1 driver with six grand prix wins to his name competed in 54 DTM races for Mercedes-Benz. In his new role, and drawing on his experience from over 20 years of motor racing, he will act in a supportive and advisory capacity to the young Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers.

German driver, Pascal Wehrlein, who is just 18-years-old, will take the wheel of the sixth DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé this coming season. His team-mate at RSC Mücke Motorsport will be Daniel Juncadella, current Formula 3 Euro Series runner-up. Wehrlein has already raced a Dallara-Mercedes for the Berlin-based team in Formula 3. Plus, the two young drivers know each other well from their time in Formula 3; Juncadella won last year’s Formula 3 Euro Series championship title with an eleven-point advantage on Wehrlein. Prior to his move to Formula 3, Wehrlein secured the Formula ADAC championship title in the 2011 season.

Mercedes-Benz juniors Roberto Merhi (21), Christian Vietoris (23) and Robert Wickens (24) will also be contesting the DTM this season alongside the two DTM rookies, Wehrlein and Juncadella. Reigning DTM champion and runner-up from 2005 Gary Paffett (31) completes the Mercedes-Benz DTM driver line-up. The experienced British driver will commence his tenth DTM season in 2013.

This season, with an average age of 23 years, Mercedes-Benz has the youngest team of drivers of all the three premium manufacturers competing in the world’s most popular touring car series. Aged just 18 years and 188 days when the season starts on 5th May 2013 in Hockenheim, Wehrlein will become the youngest driver ever to compete in the DTM. The last two Formula 3 Euro Series champions from the previous two years – Juncadella and Merhi – will likewise be on the grid for Mercedes-Benz. Wehrlein and Vietoris were runners-up in the junior series in 2012 and 2009 respectively.

Ralf Schumacher: “I’ve been thinking a great deal about my future during the last few weeks and have reached the conclusion that I am better able to support the extensive changes at Mercedes-Benz with regard to the DTM in a management role than at the wheel of a DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé. I had talks with Toto Wolff and Gerhard Ungar and asked to finish my current career as a racing driver and concentrate on this new position. I am very grateful for more than two decades in professional motor racing and the last five years with Mercedes-Benz in the DTM. We have plenty of young, up-and-coming talent in our squad of drivers and I am happy to make way for them so that I can concentrate fully on my new responsibilities in the management team at RSC Mücke Motorsport. This represents an exciting challenge for me, helping the best young drivers with my know-how and expertise, and hopefully seeing them on their way to a successful career in motor racing.”

Pascal Wehrlein: “It’s like a dream come true, my promotion to the DTM. What’s especially nice is that I will be making my DTM debut with RSC Mücke Motorsport. I know Peter Mücke’s and Ralf Schumacher’s team already from previous years when I first competed for the outfit in the Formula ADAC and then later in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Working together always went well and I can’t wait to get down to the business of setting up my new DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé for the season opener at Hockenheim with the guys from Mücke.”

Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “We would love to be with Ralf Schumacher for his sixth DTM season. However, Ralf has informed us that, after careful consideration, he sees his future in management, which we fully support. Of course, it is a pity to lose a driver of his calibre, but we are really pleased that he will remain with us in his new role. Our driver line-up is certainly a valiant bunch, but they also patently represent a huge investment in motor racing’s future by Mercedes-Benz – these guys are stars in the making. In going this route, Ralf is taking on a very important, key role, using his experience to advise and assist our young drivers.”

Pascal Wehrlein is another promising young driver who perfectly fits our philosophy with regard to DTM drivers. We are consciously taking a different track with signing Pascal. He is one of five drivers who are all still very young, but we are confident that this new approach will benefit our brand. With an average age of 23 years, we may have the youngest team of drivers in the DTM, but so far, every one of them has proven skill in the world’s leading junior series. In 2012, Daniel Juncadella won the Formula 3 Euro Series and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship; Roberto Merhi accomplished the same feat a year ago. In 2009, Christian Vietoris was second in the Formula 3 Euro Series. In 2011, Robert Wickens took the Formula Renault 3.5 championship title, and at the first attempt whilst still in his rookie year, Pascal Wehrlein was runner-up in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Bringing on young motor racing drivers has a long history at Mercedes-Benz and we are set to continue that tradition with this year’s young team of drivers.”

II. Mercedes-Benz DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein has ended his Formula 3 career with three podiums. The 18-year-old lined up this weekend at the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in Monza, Italy for the final time in Formula 3 before his move to the world’s most popular touring car series. Wehrlein achieved a win, two podiums, two pole positions and two fastest laps with his team, RSC Mücke Motorsport. Wehrlein drove to victory in the second race on Sunday in pouring rain and in extremely difficult conditions.

It was a successful start to the new FIA Formula 3 European Championship season for Mercedes-Benz. Local driver Raffaele Marciello took the first race from Austrian Lucas Auer and Wehrlein with all three drivers on the podium utilising the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine. In the second race, which Wehrlein won, seven Dallara-Mercedes came home in the top eight. Wehrlein finished second behind Marciello in the third race. The top three places in all three races at Monza were covered by drivers powered by Mercedes-Benz engines.

Next on Wehrlein’s agenda – more preparations for his debut season in the DTM. He will spend two days testing at the ITR sessions during the coming week, driving the DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé on Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Aged 18 years and 188 days, Wehrlein will be the youngest driver ever in the DTM when the season opens at Hockenheim on 5th May 2013.

Bringing on young motor racing drivers has a long tradition at Mercedes-Benz. Twelve of the 22 drivers currently competing in Formula 1 this season, plus, four of the six Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers in the 2013 line-up formerly raced in Formula 3, using Mercedes power. They are, apart from Wehrlein (runner-up, 2012): Christian Vietoris (runner-up, 2009), Roberto Merhi (champion, 2011) and Daniel Juncadella (champion, 2012). All four are in the Mercedes-Benz DTM squad this year.

Pascal Wehrlein: “What a great way to finish my Formula 3 career this weekend! A win to mark my last time out in Formula 3 was what I had most wished for, but to secure three podiums is just incredible – especially as I had a touch of flu this weekend. The conditions on Sunday were anything but easy, and this was actually my first time out in the wet at Monza. So, winning the second race was all the sweeter in view of the conditions. I’m now looking forward to the DTM and the next big adventure. I can hardly wait for the test drives in the DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé.”

Ralf Schumacher, Manager RSC Mücke Motorsport: “A win and three podiums – this represents a great start to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season for our team and a fantastic way to finish for Pascal. He has shown his promise as a young driver once again with his performance this weekend. He must now meet the challenge of driving for Mercedes-Benz in the DTM but has the skills needed for future success at this high level, for sure.”

Norbert Haug concludes his career as Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport

After more than 22 years as Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, Daimler AG Vice President Norbert Haug will conclude his career at the end of 2012. His contract will come to an end by mutual agreement with the Board of Management. Preparations for the forthcoming season continue as planned.

Norbert Haug has led the Motorsport division of Mercedes-Benz since 1 October 1990. In that time, Mercedes-Benz and its partners won six Formula One world championship titles and took 87 Formula One victories. In the DTM, Mercedes teams won a total of 32 titles under Haug’s leadership. Since the first title win in 1992, Mercedes-Benz has won 54% of all DTM races and about 60% of all DTM titles (drivers/manufacturers/teams). During that period of time Mercedes-Benz has competed in 986 races in total (Formula One, Champ Car, GT, Group C, Formula 3) under Haug’s leadership and won 439 of them (45.4%).

“Norbert Haug was the face of the Mercedes-Benz Motorsport programme for more than 20 years. For me, he put his stamp on a whole era and, as a highlight, he was responsible for the successful comeback of the Silver Arrows to Formula One. In the name of the Board of Management and the whole motorsport family, I would like to thank Norbert for his extraordinary commitment to the three-pointed star,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars and CEO of Daimler AG.

“I would like to thank the best car company in the world for more than 22 years, which never had a single moment without passion for me. I particularly wish to thank the Board for the trust and freedom they have always given me with all my activities. Since 1991, we had tremendous achievements and wins, for which I want to thank all of my colleagues. Unfortunately, with one victory in 2012 since founding our own Formula One works team in 2010, we couldn’t fulfil our own expectations. However, we have taken the right steps to be successful in the future. Our team and our drivers will do everything to achieve these goals,” said Norbert Haug.

The racing “fintail” from Mercedes-Benz Classic for the 2012 season of historic motorsport events

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mercedes-Benz enjoyed much success in international endurance races and rallies. The period at the start of the 1960s was shaped above all by the 220 SE and 300 SE “fintail” saloons with six-cylinder engines.

To commemorate the motorsport successes of the period and to keep the tradition of the brand’s exceptional racing history alive while also making historic motorsport even more attractive for private drivers, Mercedes-Benz Classic reconstructed a type 220 SE “fintail” saloon (series W 111) in 2011, for use in historic motorsport events.

The car meets the regulations of the FIA International Sporting Code, Appendix K (FIA – Féderation Internationale de l’Automobile). The vehicle is used in particular for the Dunlop FHR long-distance cup held by the Fahrergemeinschaft Historischer Rennsport e. V. (FHR) – the world’s biggest historical long-distance racing series as per Appendix K.

In the 1960s, competition vehicles typically bore close resemblance to production models in terms of technology. The usual modifications included stiffer suspension elements and body components, a larger fuel tank and an engine performance tuned specifically for the intended use.

When building the 220 SE, Mercedes-Benz Classic also followed the requirement to design a powerful competition vehicle using near-standard technology. The Classic Centre specialists made the following detailed modifications to the production vehicle, amongst others: the interior now has a roll cage with quick-connect safety coupling for side-impact fasteners such as door crossbars and side impact protectors (Fix Opening and Closure Security System, FO-CS for short).

The fintail has also been equipped with a fire extinguishing system and a 100-litre FT3 safety tank. The car will soon feature 5½ x 15 rims with 6.00 x 15 racing tyres. And of course, the W 111 has also been painted in the classic DB 140 light-grey livery which adorned the competition vehicles from 1961 to 1964.

The new Mercedes-Benz Motorsports Selection is now available from Mercedes-Benz dealers and at the online shop. Motorsports fans can choose from three dozen products, ranging from high-quality chronograph watches through fashionable apparel to practical fan articles such as cushions and flags.

A highlight in the 2012 racing season is the exclusive cooperation with new team partner PUMA. The range of Formula 1 team articles covers drivers' and team jackets,T-shirts, caps and other important accessories for visits to the race circuit. At the same time, the green of Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 partner PETRONAS is being introduced into the colour design of many motorsports fan articles.

The best-selling item last year was the Michael Schumacher Formula 1 cap. In 2012 the anthracite-coloured cap, which is also available in a Rosberg variant, features green contrasts on the piping. Other new items include a stylish ballpoint pen with black cap, chrome body and centre ring in Petronas green and a black belt in contrasting silver and green. The metal buckle sports an embossed Mercedes-Benz star.

Three watches from the Motorsports Selection ensure that fans will not miss a second of the racing action: a totally new addition is the three-handed watch with stainless steel case and date display. The green seconds hand is offset particularly effectively against the black face. Two leather straps in white and black with stitching are included. The design of the carbon face and the strap of the limited-edition chronograph watch have been made even more attractive. The sporty Passion watch kicks off the new season unaltered.

The extensive range of sporty and functional clothing includes a men's short-armed polo shirt in black cotton piqué featuring white contrasting sleeve trims and highlights in silver, Petronas green and white. The women's polo shirt in the same material comes in white. Button border and collar band are in Petronas green and the Mercedes-Benz star in the chest area consists of rhinestone.
Caps in a matching colour are available for both polo shirts. The clothing range further includes a men's T-shirt featuring a print of a DTM car, a matching new DTM cap with mesh inserts and a men's windcheater.

The current Mercedes-Benz motorsport look with green piping also features on the functional sports bag with washbag and the rucksack with the Airstripes back system for high carrying comfort. Both articles are produced by renowned rucksack specialist Deuter. Also "made by deuter" is the black and white wallet with green piping.

The Mercedes-Benz Motorsports Selection also offers a smart iPhone®case. The black polyester case has a practical lug for pulling out the iPhone®or closing the case and is also provided with a belt loop.

Mercedes motorsports fans will be prepared for all weathers with the silver and green guest umbrella, whose Teflon coating effectively prevents soiling, and with a pair of sunglasses. This unisex model is "made by Rodenstock" and is fitted with polycarbonate lenses offering UV 400 protection. A cushion provides a comfortable seat at the races. The 40 x 40 centimetre cushion can be folded together for transportation purposes and features convenient grips for carrying.
