The rising cost of gas has hit everyone hard, no matter what type of car, truck, SUV or van you drive. It costs a considerable amount to fill up your tank today, and if you’re doing the wrong things with your car, it can seem like your entire paycheck is going into the gas tank. There are some things that will actually cause your gas mileage to sink very low, and it’s important that you avoid doing things that actually increase fuel consumption. Here are five things that you need to avoid doing if you want to save money at the gas pump.

1. Not Changing Your Air Filter
Most of us don’t give much thought to the air filter in our vehicle. It’s just…there. However, if you’re waiting too long to change it, you could be paying for it in increased fuel consumption. Why is this? In order to burn fuel, your engine has to have a supply of fresh oxygen. Without oxygen, fuel doesn’t combust. Your engine pulls in air through the breather and air filter. Over time, that filter will become clogged and blocked with dirt and debris, reducing the amount of air getting to the engine and, thus, making it struggle to ignite fuel correctly.

2. Low Tire Pressure
You might not think it to look at them, but your tires are designed to hold a specific amount of air pressure. If you’ve been “eyeballing” them to see if they look low, but not actually checking them with a tire pressure gauge, you could have a hidden source of additional fuel consumption. Low tire pressure means that your tires are softer, and your engine has to work harder to turn the wheels, further increasing the amount of gasoline required to move the vehicle down the road. Set your tire pressure according to the door placard and check it regularly.

3. Excessive Idling
Sometimes, you have no choice but to let your engine idle (when you’re stuck in traffic, for instance). However, there are other times when we choose to leave the engine running even though the car isn’t going anywhere. For instance, if you pull up to a convenience store and leave your engine running because you’ll “be right back”, all you’re doing is wasting gas. If you warm up the engine in the morning for more than about a minute, you’re just wasting gas. Essentially, you’re burning fuel without actually moving, which is reducing your fuel economy.

4. Driving the Wrong Way
You don’t need to have the nickname of “Lead Foot” to be guilty of driving aggressively. If you’re punching the gas, you’re doing nothing but killing your gas mileage. The two most important things to stop doing are punching the gas hard off a start and braking hard. Accelerate more slowly and you’ll see your gas mileage improve. Start braking well before you get to the stop sign or red light and you’ll see the same benefits. Finally, try to avoid speeding – driving over about 65 MPH has a very serious penalty when it comes to how much gas you use.

5. You’re Loaded Down
How much extra weight are you carrying in your car? Is your trunk full of unnecessary things? How much extraneous stuff are you hauling around in the back seat? Interestingly, the more weight you haul in your car, the worse your fuel economy will be. Essentially, every hundred pounds of weight your car pulls drops your fuel economy by up to 2%. That can add up very quickly, as it can be difficult to assess just how much unnecessary weight is in your car.

Although Timeless, Some Mercedes-Benz Retain Their Value Better Than Others

Residual value is something that is on the top of every car owner’s mind, because the second they buy a car and drive it off the lot it immediately starts depreciating in value. This is obviously true for Mercedes-Benz as well. The Mercedes-Benz is a timeless vehicle; however, some models have much better residual values than others. Although different models and classes of Mercedes retain their original values differently, the Mercedes-Benz brand as a whole retains its value quite well within its respective segments. The E-Class and SLS AMG super-sports car have recently received the “2014 residual value champions” award from the German internet magazine Focus Online. Mercedes-Benz also showed to have the highest value retention in a study featured in Auto Bild in 2010. Perhaps the greatest example of Mercedes-Benz value retention is the classic 1950s 300SL gull-wing model which is currently worth roughly forty times its original price. However, as we all know, the 300SL is an anomaly and the majority of cars do depreciate over time. Mercedes-Benz’s are some of the best cars out there regarding residual value, but some models are definitely better than others.

C-Class Sets the Bar

According to Cars.com the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has the best resale value for the “Near-Luxury” class. The C-Class has the best residual value among all brands for this category and naturally it is also the best among all Mercedes-Benz models. Taking a look at the residual value after three years of some of the other 2012 models we can see how each class grades out when compared with the others. The C250 has the best residual value among all models with a resale value of 42% of the MSRP after three years. The C350 (41% MRSP after three years) and C63 AMG (36% MRSP after three years) also do very well for used Mercedes-Benz.

E-Class and the Rest of the Pack

The E-Class is probably the second highest rated class for resale values with the E350, E550, and E350 Sport all being worth around 30% MSRP after three years. The M-Class models are middle of the road having slightly less residual values after three years than the E-Class models.

S-Class Brings Up the Rear

The S-Class models are some of the finest luxury vehicles on the road and are equipped with more technological features than anyone could ever ask for, but they unfortunately do not have the greatest resale value among Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class models rank last among Classes C,E,M,R, and S. The S600 has the worst residual value of all models in these classes with a resale value of 20% MSRP after three years and the S63 AMG is only slightly better at 23% MSRP after three years.

When compared with other makes in respective categories, Mercedes-Benz stacks up pretty well regarding residual value. With the E-Class and SLS AMG super-sports car recently winning awards and the 2012 C-Class being named Cars.com’s best resale value for the “Near Luxury” category, it’s easy to see that Mercedes-Benz cars as a whole- retain - their values quite well. If you’re looking to get the best residual value out of your Mercedes-Benz you may want to think about a model in either the C-Class or E-Class, while avoiding models in the S-Class. However, at the end of the day, you can’t be too concerned about the residual value of your vehicle because you can’t go wrong driving a Mercedes-Benz.

The Importance of Choosing the Correct Engine Oil

Engine oil comes in a bewildering array of weights, brands and types. A quick glance at the shelves in your local auto parts store will show you everything from 5W30 to full synthetic formulations to 20W50 and more. Which is the right oil for your car? It can be tempting to buy oil based on the recommendation of friends or family, or even to use whatever weight you’ve been using for years in your previous cars. However, this is the wrong approach to take. It’s important that you choose the right oil for your vehicle.

The Problem

The problem here is that your engine is designed to work with a specific weight oil. For instance, many newer engines are designed to run 5W20 or 5W30 – this is a lighter weight, thinner oil. Using something heavier than this can cause problems. If you have been mentally conditioned by years of using heavier oil in an older car because of leaks or “just because”, this can be a hard habit to break.

Understanding Oil Weight

Part of the issue in choosing the correct oil is understanding what all those weight ratings really mean. For those who have no real experience in the automotive industry, it can seem like a string of meaningless letters and numbers. It’s not that difficult to understand, though. The key is to realize that today’s oil formulations have a dualistic nature. They’re designed to operate differently in different temperatures. Older oil formulations are denoted by “SAE” and are often referred to as “straight weight”. That means they operate like a single weight oil, regardless of what the temperature is.

Today’s oils are made to work differently in winter and summer driving. That’s what the W stands for in the oil weight – winter. So, an oil with a weight of 10W30 would operate like 10-weight oil during the winter and 30-weight oil during the summer. That’s important to understand, because you need thinner oil during cold periods and thicker oil during the heat of summer. In the past, you actually had to change oil weights seasonally. That’s no longer the case.

How to Tell Your Type

When it comes to choosing the type of oil you use in your car, your choice shouldn’t be random. The best option is to use what the manufacturer recommends. Most modern vehicles have this shown on the oil filler cap. If it’s not there, you might check the owner’s manual. Failing that, you can contact a dealer that specializes in your brand and find out what they recommend for your make and model. If you have an older car, or the oil filler cap has been replaced, you should contact a dealer and find out what the automaker recommends for your engine.

The Problems of Using the Wrong Oil

Keeping your engine oil clean and changed regularly is important, but it’s just as important that you have the right oil in the engine. Many different problems can develop from using the incorrect oil for the application. For instance, if your car is rated for a 5W20 blend and you choose to use 10W30, you’re putting much thicker oil in the engine than it was designed to use. The first thing that will happen is you’ll see more sluggish engine performance. You’ll also noticed decreased fuel economy. If there’s a significant disparity between what you’re using and what the engine was designed to use, you might even find that the oil doesn’t lubricate quite as well.

Always use the oil that your engine was designed for. If you’re going with a thicker oil because of leaks, it’s better to repair them and replace leaking gaskets than run oil that is too heavy for your car.

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing colors and the weather is cooling down. While you’re no doubt happy to see the heat of summer on the way out, cool weather presents some serious challenges for your automobile. You need to make sure that your car is prepared to handle the onset of cold weather so you are able to stay safe and sound on the road this winter.

1. Start Now

You might think that cool weather maintenance doesn’t need to be done until the onset of winter. However, fall is actually the perfect time to get a jump on things. Waiting until the weather goes from cool to cold can be a recipe for disaster, so don’t wait. Do it now.

2. Antifreeze

One of the first things you’ll need to check is your vehicle’s antifreeze. During the summer, your engine coolant keeps the engine within the normal operating temperature range. During cold weather, it does the same job, but it also keeps the coolant from freezing. Regular water (or weak antifreeze/water mixes) will freeze with low temperatures, creating serious problems for drivers. Blown radiator hoses are only the mildest threat here. Make sure you check your antifreeze level, as well as its freeze protection. If it’s been several years since it was changed, consider doing a full drain and fill.

3. Gauge Your Tires

While summertime brings thunderstorms and heavy rains that you’ll have to drive through, cold weather brings ice and snow. You’ll want to make sure that your tires are able to handle those threats. Check the tread on your tires (you can pick up a tire gauge at pretty much any auto parts store). If the tread is low, consider replacing your tires now, before they have to face the prospect of winter driving conditions. You might also consider looking into studded snow tires now if you live in an area where heavy snowfall is an issue.

4. Look at the Battery

Cold weather kills batteries. Heat during the summertime can definitely take its toll here, but the onset of winter sees the highest number of dead batteries. Don’t become a statistic – make sure that your car’s battery is fresh and up to the challenge. You should have a full charging system test performed as well to make sure your starter and alternator are in good shape.

5. Check the Wipers

We tend not to think about our windshield wipers until they’re needed, but that can be too late, especially during the colder months of the year. Make sure you have new wiper blades installed before the temperatures drop too low. You might even consider purchasing blades made especially for wintry conditions.

6. HVAC

You’ve been running your AC all summer, but now it’s time to crank up the heater. Make sure your heater works well before cold weather arrives. A heater that doesn’t do its job could be suffering from any number of problems, from a faulty heater core to a dying thermostat – all easy enough to rectify if caught in time, but real hassles if you let them wait.

7. Winter Prep Is Important

While it the cool, comfortable days might be a nice change from the heat of summer, don’t let yourself be fooled. Cold weather can arrive with no warning, and being caught unprepared is a bad thing. Make sure you have your vehicle prepped for the arrival of winter – if you are unsure exactly what to check, use a reputable mechanic and have them conduct a full inspection for any issues pertaining to winterizing your vehicle.

The motorsport supplier has evolved from what was often a single-sport supplier into an expert jack of all motor driven trades: from karting to motocross; from road biking to stock car racing. Wherever there’s an ignition switch and a passion for winning, there’s a range of behind the scenes experts helping riders and drivers to achieve their peak performances, safely and consistently.

The setup of any motorsport vehicle is critical to the success s of its rider or driver. Soft suspension; hardsuspension; road tyres; off road tyres. Whether you are looking for rain slicks or a more complete travel on the forks of your motocross bike, the chances are good that you’ll call in the expertise of a supplier and/or fitter to help you get the best from your machine.

There are of course different gradations of tweaking that can be done to a machine – which is why there are different levels of service available from some motorsport supplier companies. For instance, while one supplier might concentrate on a specific machine – like motorbikes or karts, for example – and provide assessments and servicing in addition to the parts themselves; another may provide a broad range of motorsport accessories but no assessments or fitting services.

That isn’t to say that you can’t use abroad brush motorsport supplier and not get the benefit of professional fitting advice or servicing. The power of the internet, for example, allows you to find the best prices for the equipment you need to tune your bike or four wheeled vehicle; so you can get the best priced accessories from a larger supplier and turn to the smaller, more specialty providers for analysis and tuning.

Safety is key across the whole range of motorsports. Any activity that involves powered speed necessitates a range of safety gear, from helmets to leathers and from boots to gloves. Again depending on the nature of your sport you may be required to get different variations on the theme: but overall you need a good helmet to protect the head; boots and gloves for feet and hands; and a range of body coverings to protect against impact, abrasion and in some cases fire. Racing drivers, for example, wear fireproof undergarments beneath their overalls to give them assistance in the event of an engine fire.

One of the most frequently overlooked items of motorsport safety kit is the humble earplug. For years, earplugs have been either not quite good enough or horrendously expensive – as you could either put up with a basic factory shape, not quite the right fit for your ear; or have an earplug set custom made to your exact dimensions. Now there’s a third option. Stocked by a lot of motorsport supplier companies – mould your own earplugs, which allow you to custom make ear protection using high quality materials, but for a fraction of the price of having a pair made bespoke by an earplug company.

Mercedes-Benz Embraces Alternative Power

It is well understood that vehicles powered by fossil fuels are expensive to run and damaging to the environment. With the cost of petrol and gas soaring, making motoring ever-more costly for the consumer, it is no wonder manufacturers like Mercedes Benz are embracing innovative fuel technology.

There are now a range of alternative fuel types available, including ethanol, biodiesel, natural gas, propane and hydrogen. They aim to reduce the planet’s dependency on fossil fuels, while decreasing vehicle pollution levels. Some of these fuels can even be domestically produced, with a view to reducing the world’s reliance on imports from afar.

Using hydrogen as a fuel

In 2011, Mercedes-Benz revealed the F 125! concept car, which boasted an innovative hydrogen storage solution. Hydrogen could be the ideal alternative fuel in many ways. It can be domestically produced using nuclear power, hydropower, and other renewable sources, and it doesn’t emit any pollution into the atmosphere. However, harnessing the power of the fuel does not come without its challenges.

Not only have automobile designers had the difficulty of producing a safe and cost-effective hydrogen infrastructure, but they’ve had to deal with the on-board storage on hydrogen in a vehicle. Experts agree that the best solution currently is fuel-cell cars, featuring 700 bar compressed hydrogen, and plan is to start commercialising early hydrogen vehicles in 2015.

But this on-board fuel-cell system has been problematic in terms of design, mostly due to the storage of the cylinders. Hydrogen cylinders are expensive, heavy and large, adding to the expense of vehicles, reducing the amount of space available in the cabin and restricting the design possibilities.

 However, the Mercedes-Benz F 125! concept car integrates a hydrogen fuel tank into the structure of the vehicle using metal-organic frameworks. This has been designed as a full-cell hybrid model and it absorbs hydrogen gas molecules at pressures of just 20-30 bar – eliminating any difficulties in storing bulky hydrogen tanks.

The Plug Power fuel cell

Mercedes-Benz is steaming ahead with its plans to implement hydrogen-fuelled vehicles. In July of this year, the esteemed manufacturer selected the Power Plug hydrogen fuel cell to use in its Hyster electric life truck fleet. Power Plug is a leading provider of environmentally friendly energy solutions and the fuel-cells will replace lead-acid batteries to ensure a constant flow of power to the truck. It will eliminate the costly maintenance infrastructure and reduce the size of the area required for charging batteries.

Running on natural gas

Mercedes-Benz has experimented with more than just hydrogen and to great effect, in the natural gas-powered B 200. Although natural gas is still a fossil fuel, it emits less greenhouses gases and pollutants than both petrol and diesel.

Vehicles powered by natural gas have long been restricted to the commercial markets and the B 200 is the first passenger vehicle of its kind. It is due to hit Mercedes’ showrooms at the beginning of 2013.

As with hydrogen fuel-cells, problems have arisen regarding the storage of the gas tanks in smaller vehicles. In the B 200, the body of the car includes the Energy Space – a double floor which houses 125 litres of gas in containers. There is also a 12 litre petrol tank available, for use in the event that you run out of fuel.

In terms of performance, the B 200 has a top speed of 200 kph and offers carbon emissions of just 115 grams per kilometre.

The commercialisation of alternative fuels

Every motorist knows all too well about the ever-rising cost of fuel. Petroleum and diesel prices have rocketed in recent years based on the cost of crude oil, ACC levies and the Emissions Trading Scheme. By using alternative fuels commercial and domestic vehicle users can benefit from tax incentives, which drive down the cost of transport. With the import and export still strong in the trade sector, industry will benefit greatly from lower transport costs, which can in turn be passed on to the customers. As the cost of manufacturing alternatively fuelled vehicles comes down, bio-fuel carhire fleets will be able to offer lower deals the customers – who will also save on the cost of filling a tank. In terms of logistics, lower fuel costs mean companies can afford to sell imported products at more competitive rates – cost savings the end user can enjoy.

Alternative fuel technology offer a wealth of cost benefits to domestic and industrial drivers alike, and Mercedes-Benz continues to spearhead the campaign.

• Interior – The interior of your vehicle should be thoroughly cleaned (from the seats down to the floor mats). A protectant should be applied to all vinyl and leather components (including the dashboard, console and door trim).

• Wheels – Proper wheel care is important, and a good detailing service will use the right cleaner and protectant for the type of wheels you have (steel, aluminum, etc.).

What to Expect in Costs

Auto detailing isn’t “cheap”, but it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg, either. A full service on a car in good shape might run you about $150, but that will vary with different factors, including where you live, the condition of your car and the extent of the service that you choose. Choosing a Modern Classic Mercedes-Benz

While modern Mercedes Benz are at the pinnacle of automotive technology and engineering, for sheer style, elegance and character you can’t beat some of the marque’s classic designs. Buying a classic Mercedes has plenty of advantages. Many Mercedes of old were heavily over-engineered, which means it is easy to find even a thirty-year-old model in perfect working order. Furthermore, unlike the electrical wizardry used in most modern cars, older models are much easier to repair and maintain.

While some classic Mercedes have become legendry cars, such as the 1954 Mercedes W 196, which went on to dominate road racing during the 1950s and the Mercedes Benz 540K Special Roadster of 1937, of which only 29 were produced, these fetch millions when they come to auction. However, while these may out of the price range of most people, some more contemporary Mercedes are becoming classics in their own right, and these cars are more within the range of people with a few thousand saved up or access to guaranteed car finance. Furthermore, the great thing about these modern classics is that many of them are rising in value, making them a great investment for the future.

W 201/190 E

The W201 built between 1982 and 1993 had a solid reputation and it was perhaps the most overly engineered car Mercedes ever produced. As a result, many of the 1.8 million cars sold globally are still on the road. Because of its build quality and familiar shape, the W201 is fast becoming a desirable classic. Positioned below the E and S Class, the W201 was often marketed as the 190E and came in a wide range of models.

The engine sizes range from the basic 1.8 litre, to the more sporty 2.0 litre four cylinder and 2.6 straight six. While the 2.6 is a little hard to come by, a 2.0 litre 190E automatic is a great all-round car. Well-equipped, with their leather upholstery and air con, the 190E makes a great daily runabout as well providing that touch of style required by all modern classics. It is a good time to buy too, as prices are still affordable, although they are rising all the time.

W 108

For something more distinguished, the W108 built from 1965 to 1972 offers a design classic that harks back to the days of the old fintail. As a predecessor to the S-Class, the W108s offer all the presence of a classic limousine. Engine sizes ranged from the 2.5 litre straight six to a whopping 6.3 litre V8. Anything under 3 litres will feel pretty sedate for such a big car but it is possible to find 3.5 litre V8s that are still in great condition and provide a decent amount of acceleration.

Mint W108s are highly collectable so you may have to pay through the nose for a good one. However, if you have the time and patience, doing up a less than perfect W108 will not only give you a great sense of satisfaction but also prove a decent investment for the future.


R 107

For something more modern, but no less stylish, the R107 is one of Mercedes most successful models ever. Built as a replacement to the SL Class in 1972, Mercedes was still rolling out R107s in 1989. This popularity means it is not hard to find a decent one and as most have been prized possessions they have usually been well looked after. Avoid any with rust, though, as this can be costly to put right.

Perhaps the most sought after version is the C107 SLC, which is essentially a coupe version of the R107 and built as a grand tourer. These are rare, but it is not hard to find a decent R107 300 SL, which is almost as stylish and offers plenty of power. Unlike the V8 models, the straight six 300 is fairly economical too, even by today’s standards.


W 126

For true refinement with the feel of a modern limousine, the W126 introduced in the early eighties is still one of the best luxury saloons ever produced. They came as both a coupe (SEC), which are highly sought after, and a more affordable saloon (SEL and SLC), although their price is rising all the time.

Not only do the SELs offer unrivalled luxury (leather, air con etc), but also with a 5.0 litre V8 under the bonnet they really shift. Perhaps the models that offer the best investment are the 500SEL and 560SEL, good examples of which are not hard to come by and are guaranteed to rise in value over the next few years, or go for the more affordable and later model SLC, which is also bound to become a modern classic.

Practicalities

Of course, buying a modern classic Mercedes does mean that you won’t get a warranty and you will need to be prepared to do some regular maintenance. Fortunately, many garages are familiar with many of these models and they are not as costly to repair as you may think. Spares are readily available through Mercedes owners clubs and even reconditioned engines can be found at fairly reasonable prices. Of course, getting finance for a classic car can be a bit tricky but there are plenty of car finance companies willing to stump up the cash. It is worth searching the internet for phrases such as carloan4u to see what interest rates and deals you can get, but the good news is that some of these models do qualify for classic car insurance (although mileage is limited) and may even be tax exempt (if over 25 years old).

Tips for Avoiding Aggressive Drivers While You're on the Road

The best way to avoid an aggressive driver while you are on the road is for you to not become an aggressive driver.

Remain Calm
It is never going to make something right by doing another wrong. When you are behind the wheel of a car with an aggressive driver, the best thing to do is remain in control and be calm. By doing what the aggressive driver is doing, you will only make them madder and circumstances can escalate into something much worse.

Three Second Rule
When you do come across an aggressive driver, you will only get them angrier if you get behind them too closely and follow them. Always try to keep a three second time period between yourself and the aggressive driver. Now, if the aggressive driver seems to be tailing you, don’t slam on the brakes. That will further anger the aggressive driver. What you need to do is turn on your signal and pull over and let the driver pass. The bottom line is that you want to be safe. Keeping your head cool and letting them go by is the best idea.

Driving Intentions
Always be sure when driving that you have your driving intentions well clarified. Always use your turn signals and brake lights. Make sure drivers around you know what you’re getting ready to do. What makes a driver hot and angry is when another driver does something on the road suddenly that would cause too much surprise and distress.

Benefit of Doubt
Always give the other drivers the benefit of the doubt. Another driver may be driving fast or weaving in and out of traffic because of an emergency situation. The driver could be a surgeon, volunteer fireman or an undercover detective. We never know what the driver’s circumstances are so we have to assume they know what they are doing and let them move past us.

Competitive Attitude
The last thing you want to do is have an aggressive and competitive attitude when driving down the road. Try to always be the one who is the courteous driver. Yield when you are supposed to yield and use your blinker even though you don’t think you have to. People have a lot more respect for a driver who is courteous. As hard as it may be try to follow the courtesy rule as opposed to the right of way rule. Let a troublesome vehicles pass you by and get ahead of you instead of letting them be a threat to you.

Apology
If someone puts themselves in the position to have a threatening attitude with you while driving, try your best to not reciprocate that feeling. Don’t try to act like you don’t notice it or act like you don’t care. That will just engage that driver more to be threatening towards you. In many cases, a nice apology and having a pleasant face will help calm the circumstances down. If you can’t do that, keep quiet to be safe.

Overall, if you have tried these tips to get rid of the aggressive driver and they fail, call someone for help. Go to a more crowded area and wait for help to arrive. Never let an angry driver follow you to your home.

However, the mild Mediterranean climate and beautiful coastal towns attract many visitors every year and you can drive to Naples after exploring this Italian commune if you are still hungry for adventure.

5. Côte d'Azur (France, Monaco)
The Cote d'Azur has been popular with British holidaymakers for many years and one of the best ways to explore this region at a leisurely pace is by car. Taking a vehicle across the channel is simplicity itself these days and the views from the coastal road that connects resorts such as Cannes, St Tropez and Nice are fantastic.

6. Route 62 (South Africa)
A great way to explore the southern tip of Africa, this scenic highway will take you from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, passing through many of South Africa’s most famous wine growing regions along the way.

7. The Alaska Highway (USA)
If you fancy the idea of exploring a pristine wilderness, with snow-capped mountains and frozen lakes, the Alaska Highway is certainly worth considering. Nearly 1,400 miles in length, it is a route that only real motoring enthusiasts should attempt as it would probably take more than a day to complete even with no planned stops along the way.

8. Sydney to Cairns (Australia)
Another long journey of around 1,500 miles, you could easily spend a couple of weeks or more on this route that includes highlights such as Byron Bay and Gold Coast. Be sure to pack a variety of clothing, as Sydney can be rather chilly at times whereas Cairns has a tropical climate.

9. The Cornish Coast (UK)
Whether you choose the northern or southern route, you can travel from one end of Cornwall to the other in just over a couple of hours but with many beautiful beaches and great spots to stop for a bite to eat along the way, I would recommend taking your time.

10. The Irish Coast (Ireland)
Ireland boasts miles of dramatic coastline and you could spend weeks discovering it by road if you have the time to spare. Dingle Peninsula and the Copper Coast are two of the most popular areas that visitors head for but there are many more from which to choose.

I hope that these suggestions have invigorated your inspiration for the open road – summer holidays do not have to always be two weeks in a home from home, but can provide the opportunity to explore stunning areas of the world by road.

Mercedes-Benz Takes Pole Position with Most Satisfied Customers

There are a number of ways to prepare a list of the top car brands in the current market. A common approach is to track the units sold on a yearly basis and come up with a list of car manufacturers who’ve sold the most cars per year. Research companies then frequently break the list down to determine what percentage of the market each automaker occupies by country and by region. While this information is certainly helpful to consumers, many also like to know how each automaker ranked in terms of customer satisfaction.

Some consumers feel that customer satisfaction is by far the most important factor to consider when they are shopping for a new car. Often when deciding between two vehicles, a consumer will ultimately go with the brand that has a better reputation for customer service. According to the 2012 Prospect Satisfaction Index, this year Mercedes-Benz provided their customers with the best service. To determine this, data was pulled from the US Auto Industry Benchmarking Study spearheaded by Pied Piper Management Company.

In that study, car companies were rated based on sixty different components by a team of 4000 mystery shoppers. These components included details about the first few interactions between the buyer and the salesperson, including whether the salesperson introduced himself to the buyer or not, whether the buyer was invited to test-drive the car, and whether the salesperson provided the buyer with a clear picture of financial options for purchasing the car. In short, automakers were rated on how well they treated the customers, from the time they first began shopping for a vehicle up until they drove off the lot.

Unsurprisingly, luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz scored highest in ten (10) of the sixty (60) customer satisfaction categories and was determined to have the most satisfied customers of any car brand. Following behind Mercedes, there was a three way tie between Japanese brands Acura, Infinity and Lexus. The brands with the least satisfied customers were Audi, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Suzuki. Additionally, the study found that the salespeople from Volkswagen, Buick and Subaru were more impressive in terms of customer service than those at BMW or Hyundai.

Fuel Efficient Mercedes-Benz: No Longer a Contradiction in Terms

If you are thinking about joining the exclusive Mercedes-Benz club, there are probably a couple of automotive criteria at the top of your list, namely world-class performance and extraordinary luxury and comfort.

Mercedes Benz has traditionally been less heralded for its fuel economy, but with the automotive marketplace changing and buyers demanding more in the way of fuel efficiency, Daimler has recently made the decision to jump into the “green driving” market with both feet – without sacrificing performance or luxury.

If this sounds like the best of both worlds – you’re right, it is! And while Mercedes Benz has taken some negative press for lagging behind the competition with regards to fuel efficiency, the vast majority of that criticism has now been muted by Mercedes Benz’ recent green car innovations.

Or, as Daimler CEO DeiterZetsche recently said: “If you are going to arrive a bit late to the dinner party, be sure you bring the best wine.”

Mercedes Benz may have been fashionably late to the green car gathering, but they’ve finally delivered the goods that will keep partygoers captivated for the duration.

Below, I will highlight three recent releases that affirm Mercedes Benz’ commitment to fuel economy and sustainable driving:

1. Mercedes Benz ML 350 Bluetec

With their 2013 M-Class editions, Mercedes Benz has perfected their innovative BlueEFFECIENCY scheme, which increases fuel efficiency and decreases emissions through a series of basic design modifications.

Specifically, the Mercedes Benz ML 350 Bluetec has been hailed as one of the greenest highway SUVs on the market, offering EPA estimated 20 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway.

The ML 350 Bluetec is literally in a class of its own, as no other luxury manufacturer has yet perfected the clean diesel technology that Mercedes Benz offers in this model – while at the same time offering incredible performance for any vehicle that dares call itself “green”.

2. Mercedes Benz E 400 Hybrid

Moving down the road in a Mercedes Benz in a vehicle that is consuming absolutely no gasoline is now a possibility, as the 2013 E400 Hybrid can go for up to a mile at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour without even firing the gas engine.

And once the gas motor does engage, you’ll be getting as much as 30-35 miles per gallon in a vehicle that is still capable of going from 0 to 60 in 6.7 seconds.

This marriage between performance and efficiency is possible thanks to Mercedes’ hybrid technology, which combines a 275-horsepower, 3.5 liter V-6, with an electric motor.

3. 2013 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG

The latest entry to the legendary G-class series that first started in 1990 has a few new things to offer consumers – particularly those interested in fuel economy.

While Mercedes Benz has introduced changes to the G-Series very gradually – after all it’s difficult to tinker with perfection – but the 2013 model offers something beyond class, style and incredible off-road prowess.

Thanks to a fascinating technological innovation, the 2013 AMG now performs 13% better in gas mileage and enables drivers to utilize a patented ECO stop/start function that allows them to choose to optimize fuel efficiency over performance or vice versa, depending on the situation.

Guest Post: Stand out from the crowd with Irish number plates

We're not talking number plates from the Republic of Ireland here, but did you know that you can use Northern Irish number plates on any UK registered car? And that the format is different from the one used in the rest of the UK?

Cherished number plates are becoming more and more popular as a way to make your vehicle different from all the others. Of course there are all kinds of accessories and added extras you can get to make your car different, but they are usually mass produced and you may well find someone else with the same hub caps, lights, internal accessories, even fluffy dice if that's your thing! What you won't find someone with is the same number plate. And to make your car really stand out, why not consider Irish number plates?

The number plate system in Northern Ireland is different from the one in the rest of the UK. Whereas in England, Scotland and Wales the plates have had a date identifier since the mid 1960s, in Northern Ireland that isn't the case. Northern Irish registration plates start with three letters, always including a Z or an I. These vary according to which of the eight regions the plate is first registered in. The letters are then followed by 1-4 numbers. For example, BAZ 1234 would be a valid Northern Irish number plate, and so would DIG 1.

If you have a Northern Irish registration plate transferred to your vehicle you can be sure that it will look very different from the majority of other number plates around the UK mainland. This is a great advantage for you if you own a business and want the vehicles to stand out from the jam of vehicles on the roads. Or even for an individual wanting their car to look unique they can be a great investment.

So why is a Northern Irish number plate better than a special British number plate?
• No Northern Irish registration plates have age identifiers so you can put any plate on any age car as long as it is registered to the vehicle.
• They are often much cheaper than the cherished plates from the UK mainland, especially the pre 1965 ones with no date identifiers.
• They have a different format to most mainland UK registration numbers, so you can be even more different than if you have a personalised number plate from DVLA.
• The DVA in Northern Ireland offer regular auctions of plates which are available, particularly those which spell names or words. This can be a good way to get a bargain if you buy at the right time.

Contrary to what you might think, it isn't difficult to get an Irish plate transferred to your vehicle. If you can buy the vehicle in Northern Ireland or you have a Northern Irish registered car it makes things easier, as plates have to be registered to a Northern Irish car first. You can then pay a transfer fee to transfer it to your car. Otherwise the company selling the plate should be able to explain their arrangements for transferring the registration to your vehicle.

So if you've been considering getting personalised number plates to spell your name, your business name, or for some other reason, then it's certainly worth considering Northern Irish number plates as an alternative.

You love them or you hate them, the Miami Heat that is. And because LeBron James and the Heat finally won an NBA Championship, this seems to be more true now than ever before. In the last few games at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Heat fans have come out en masse to support their hometown team, a rarity in a city known for its less than dedicated fans. Though Heat fanatic Martin Reese of Daytona Beach was unfortunately not be able to get a seat for any of the games, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s website, the former teacher turned artist definitely brought his talents to South Beach for the NBA Finals.

Mr. Reese is the proud owner of a 1983 Mercedes-Benz, which he has turned into a “Heat-mobile.” The Heat fanaticwas spotted riding around Miami in his Benz around during the Finals taking pictures with fans and showing off his new and improved ride. With Miami’s logo painted on the hood, LeBron James painted on the trunk, and caricatures of Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh adorning the sides, Reese and his elderly Mercedeswere hard to miss.

Reese says the paint job took him about 100 hours to complete, and he also pointed out that it wasn’t the car’s first makeover. When Pittsburgh played Green Bay in the 2011 Super Bowl, Reese decked the Benz out to support his beloved Steelers and drove it to the game in Dallas. Though the car had Troy Polamlu’s infamous locks painted on the trunk and was nicknamed “The Immaculate Mercedes,” Pittsburgh ultimately fell to Aaron Rodgers and the Pack. Because I’ve been a closet Oklahoma City fan since the Bulls were eliminated, I am disappointed if the samefate did not await LeBron James and the Heat this year.

With the gorgeous summer months here and ideal traveling conditions for the highway adventurer, doing right by your car will lead to a mutually satisfactory arrangement on road trips to come with limited stops along the way.

Car Maintenance Is The Key

You should be keeping your car in tip-top condition anyway, but if you want to save money in the long run – and you do – heed those dates written down on the stickers that get slapped onto your windshield. This means staying current and up-to-date on oil and other fluid changes, car inspection and tire pressure (keeping your tires properly inflated can end up saving you as much as 11 cents per gallon in the long run!) If you have a newer car, there’s a good chance your dashboard will alert you when something requires attention, but no one would be remiss in keeping track manually. Put it on your calendar or set a reminder on your smart phone.

Own an Efficient Vehicle

This might go without saying, but sometimes you need a push in the right direction. If you’re driving an older car or truck that does poorly in terms of gas mileage, there’s a chance you’re better off trading it in for something better. But before you make such a big decision, consider a few factors: how many miles you drive, the price of fuel in your area and the fuel economy of both vehicles, old and new. If it turns out you don’t save that much, then stick with what you have and make smaller adjustments to improve mileage. If the savings end up being substantial, then you have a lot more to consider in your future. In that vein, before you up and buy a $20,000 hybrid (which is on the lowest possible end, price-wise), consider that studies have shown it can take years before a hybrid saves the buyer enough money to compensate for the more expensive price tag.

Don’t Drive 2 Fast or 2 Furious

All the behaviors that make you feel as if you’re Paul Walker in a Skyline GT-R – aggressive acceleration, speeding and sudden braking – are making your Honda weep. And it’s weeping tears of gasoline. The folks at fueleconomy.gov suggest that this kind of driving can cost you 33 percent of your fuel efficiency on the highway and five percent in your city or town. Wasting money to look cool? Granted, it’s probably not the first time for anybody, but this is one change you can make now to keep your wallet fuller and the roads safer for everyone.

Mend Your Weights

You might have heard before that the heavier your car the less fuel efficient it will be. It’s not only true, it’s amendable. In simple scientific terms, the heavier an object the more energy that’s required to propel it forward. Extra weight in your vehicle means the engine has to work that much harder, while every added 100 lbs. in your car can cause a decrease of two percent in gas mileage. To offset this, in every day driving, don’t let heavy equipment or boxes linger in your trunk; remove your bike rack if you’re not using it on a daily basis.

On longer trips you should attempt to pack as lightly as possible, limiting each family member to one suitcase of the smallest size they can manage. Your wife and daughter probably don’t need 10 pairs of shoes each for a week at the beach, right? If you’re staying somewhere that offers washer and dryer amenities, take advantage of that and cut down the number of shirts and shorts in everyone’s suitcases. First, you’ll need a smaller vehicle that can handle the city’s hot pavement in the summer and snow covered streets in the winter. Forget about a huge SUV, truck or any other non-compact automobile, as you’ll spend hours circling looking for a big enough parking spot. Small-sized and compact cars all provide you with fuel efficiency, all-weather capabilities as well as the small size to skirt in and out of infamous New York traffic.

Chicago, Illinois
The Chicago winters are brutal, but so are the summers. Many overlook the fact that residents of the upper Midwest’s largest city are often subjected to oppressively harsh summer weather, meaning their vehicle must be able to withstand these drastic temperature fluctuations. The city’s traffic is a mess, but you’re still able to get around in an SUV or small truck fitted with all-season tires, which are both good bets when the temperatures plummet below zero and there’s two feet of snow on the ground. A sedan, hatchback or wagon are all acceptable, just pay attention that whatever you decide to choose. The most crucial winter weather feature is available and fully functional; four-wheel drive. Many SUVs, minivans, sedans and almost any vehicle you can imagine are now outfitted with four-wheel drive and the feature is becoming more affordable.

Miami, Florida
Everyone assumes that your vehicle’s look, make, model and price tag are all that matters in the very possession-conscious city of Miami, Florida. What these same don’t realize is that having a sleek convertible or ridiculously expensive sports car will get you noticed on the streets, but it won’t keep you safe or necessarily come equipped with the many features mandatory to help you from getting lost on this city’s complex road system. Anyone that’s drive throughout Miami will tell you that navigating its roadways is a chore, which is made all the easier with an onboard navigation system. Parking, or more notably the lack of spaces and the constant presence of the meter police, makes finding a spot not only a chore, it’s actually sometimes more difficult than the notoriously congested New York City. Keeping this is mind, it’s a good bet to purchase and make your way around the busy city on a motorcycle, moped or anything that features two wheels. If you must have a car, once again choose a newer model subcompact or sedan that can withstand the heat, sand and constant traffic.

Whichever city, state or climate you reside in, please remember to change the filler neck for a more fuel-efficient vehicle, which is always a good bet. The price of gasoline is inflated no matter where you travel, making owning and driving a car that receives excellent gas mileage a wise investment, no matter what.

In order to update your Mercedes-Benz Navigation System you will need to visit the official Navteq website and order your new DVD online. The shopping system is easy to use as you simply select the model and year of your vehicle, and can then add the correct DVD to your shopping cart. Typically a new Mercedes Navteq DVD will take around 7 working days to arrive.  Once you are in possession of your new GPS map updates disc then it is easy to install. This is what you do (works for most classes):

1. If your existing Mercedes-Navigation DVD is already in the disc drive then eject it and insert your new 2012 disc.

2. On most models the console should now ask you whether you wish to update the GPS maps, so make sure that you click YES to confirm.

3. Next you will need to type in your unique Navteq customer authentication code. This can be found on the packaging that came with the disc when sent to you by Navteq (so don’t lose it!).

4. The new GPS maps should now start to install. Make sure that you do not turn the system off whilst the navigation upgrade is happening as this could lead to a corrupted install.
