The first car with a star to roll off the production line in 1978 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen was the E-Class Estate. With the introduction of the SL series in 1989, the Bremen team gained know-how on the production of premium roadster. In 1996 came the "little brother" of the SL: the all new SLK. Both models have now reached the third model generation to be assembled at the Bremen factory. The ceremonial handover of the one millionth roadster to its owner gathered around 300 guests at the Mercedes-Benz Customer Center in the city on the Weser river.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Sales and Marketing, and plant manager Andreas Kellermann handed over the keys of the anniversary vehicle, a black-coloured SL 63 AMG, to a customer from Diepholz / Lower Saxony. "We are very proud to have sent one million roadsters on the road. The three generations of the SL and SLK built at Bremen stand themselves for the technical vehicles advancement and for the of state-of-the-art technology in production. Unchanged remains the passion which the Bremen team manufactures the SLK and the SL with. It makes an important contribution to ensuring that our roadsters are highly sought after worldwide," Kellermann said.

Overview of the roadster production at the Bremen plant

- 1989: Start of production for the SL Series (R 129)
- 1996: Start of production of the SLK (R 170)
- 2001: A new generation of the SL is launched (R 230)
- 2004: The second generation SLK starts assembly (R 171)
- 2011: The new SLK celebrates world premiere (R 172)
- 2012: The new SL comes with an innovative all-aluminum body (R 231)

About the SL and SLK

In 1952, the forefather of the SL came as a racing car on the international circuits. In 1954, Mercedes-Benz launched the first production model: the legendary 300 SL Gullwing. 1963, 1971, 1989, 2001 and 2012 were followed by new generations of the SL roadster series. The early generations were produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen. Since 1989, the Bremen has joined the production network for open-top models. Over 675,000 units of the SL rolled off the band after production started in 1954. The iconic sports car finds more and more enthusiastic drivers: in 2012, 10.700 cars were delivered to customers, three times compared to 2011. The United States is by far the largest market for the SL, nearly half of the vehicles being sold there. The legendary roadster is also very popular on the home market in Germany and in Japan. For the assembly of the current series, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen expanded its technological expertise and introduced innovative all-aluminum shell construction standards for future-oriented automotive production. The new SL is up to 140 kg lighter than its predecessor.

In 1994, Mercedes-Benz showcased the compact SLK roadster at the Turin Motor Show as a study. World premiere of the serial model came in 1996 when the "little brother of the SL" celebrated official introduction in Turin. In 2000, the SLK received an extensive facelift. Four years later, the second generation of the SLK was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. 2008 brought the facelift for the second generation. In 2011, the third generation of the SLK hit the market. To date, the SLK has inspired more than 600,000 customers worldwide. In 2012, there were 31,800 deliveries, which makes the SLK the market leader in its segment.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen

With over 12,500 employees, the Bremen plant is the largest private employer in the region. Currently at the site, eight models are produced: the C-Class Sedan, the C-Class Estate and the C-Coupe; the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, the GLK, and the SLK and SL roadsters. In 2012, the plant has produced more than 316,000 vehicles - an all-time record. As a center of excellence for the new C-Class, which celebrates world premiere in 2014, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen also controls the entire production network of the new high-volume series which integrated further foreign factories in Tuscaloosa / USA, Beijing / China and East London / South Africa.

"AUTO BILD Sports Car of the Year 2012“: Double victory for Mercedes-AMG

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection
In a poll to determine the "Sports car of the year 2012", readers of the German motoring magazine "AUTO BILD Sportscars" put two models from Mercedes-AMG right at the top of the list: the Mercedes SL 63 AMG won the category of 'Production Cabriolets', while the Mercedes SLS AMG GT was the undisputed winner among the 'Production Super Sports Cars'.

173 candidates made it on to the short list in the vote for the "Sports cars of the year 2012". 72,475 readers of AUTO BILD Sportscars then cast their votes online for their personal favourites. And in two categories the result came out in favour of cars from the performance brand Mercedes-AMG. In the 'Production Cabriolets' segment it was the Mercedes SL 63 AMG that was waved through in first place by the chequered flag. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT then tore across the finishing line ahead of the rest of the pack in the category of 'Production Super Sports Cars'.

The SL 63 AMG Roadster offers an impressive blend of systematic lightweight construction, outstanding performance and exemplary efficiency. Its all-aluminium bodyshell is complemented by a V8 powerpack with an output of between 395 kW (537 hp) and 415 kW (564 hp). It is a combination that provides the perfect prerequisites for unrivalled dynamism and an effortlessly superior driving experience. Also contributing to the car's outstanding performance are its AMG sports suspension on the basis of Active Body Control (ABC), a new AMG speed-sensitive sports steering system, AMG high-performance composite brakes and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. What is more, the high-performance Roadster manages to combine elegant design and a comprehensive package of standard equipment with a high level of safety.

The SLS AMG GT, available as either a Coupé or Roadster, is a performance-oriented GT variant of the already legendary Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and exudes emotional appeal. Uprated to 435 kW (591 hp) and with optimised shift times and the new AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension, the gull-wing model is a true superstar among super sports cars. And thus ideally suited to take on important responsibilities, for example as the Official F1™ Safety Car during the 2012 season. As its driver Bernd Mayländer says of his 'company car': "The SLS AMG GT is the best Safety Car I've ever driven!"

- AMG performance suspension
- AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system
- AMG Exterior Carbon package (cross strut in front apron, exterior mirror housings and spoiler lip in genuine carbon fibre)
- AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA

AMG Performance Media as a highlight

Another highlight is the AMG Performance Media, familiar from the SLS AMG and C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series. This innovative and informative system has been inspired by the world of motorsport and provides numerous telemetry displays of such items as various engine data as well as lateral and linear acceleration and lap times.

Key functions at a glance:
- Real-time display of lateral and linear acceleration combined with braking performance and accelerator position, including memory function
- Recording of individual lap times on a closed-off race circuit, with sector times and memory function
- Integration of functions to save setup data to memory and initiate RACE START
- Real-time display of acceleration time from 0-100 km/h (alternatively: quarter-mile)
- Real-time display of engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid temperature
- Real-time display of engine output, torque and accelerator position
-
Real-time display of individual tyre pressures

AMG Performance Media is activated by pressing the AMG key in the AMG DRIVE UNIT, and operated with the COMAND Controller. All functions are visible on the high-resolution 17.8 cm colour display of the COMAND Online multimedia system. Numerous items of information which are otherwise integrated into the AMG menu in the central display are now to be found in graphic form in AMG Performance Media – e.g. the tyre pressure display, the active transmission mode, the ESP® mode and the engine oil/coolant/transmission oil temperatures.

The upper menu bar offers a choice of "Data", "Race" and "Setup", while the lower bar offers further choices such as "Temp", "Power" and "Tyres". When the desired sub-menu has been selected, the menu bars disappear and the display fills the entire screen. Three displays always appear at the same time, the most important information being displayed in the centre. Simulated digital dial instruments with red needles ensure outstanding legibility. The vehicle is configured using the "Setup" menu – storing e.g. the transmission mode or the ESP® mode: the active setup appears on the left, an individually configurable setup in the centre and RACE START mode on the right.

Real-time "Power" display: engine output and torque

Sheer excitement is guaranteed by the "Power" display: depending on the accelerator position shown on the right, the central dial instrument shows the current engine output in hp while the scale on the left indicates the current torque in newton metres – in this way AMG Performance Media delivers full, visual proof of the high performance of which the top-of-the-range AMG model is capable. In the "Temp" menu the engine oil temperature is shown in the centre, flanked by the coolant temperature (left) and the transmission oil temperature (right). The tyre pressure display shows a stylised SL 63 AMG and the respective individual tyre pressures.

"Race" mode: G-Meter visualises high driving dynamics

In "Race" mode the so-called G-Meter appears in the centre, showing the driver the current lateral and linear acceleration. The left and right displays show the current brake pressure and the accelerator position, each as a percentage. The G-Meter enables the driver to monitor the high driving dynamics. Depending on the current driving situation, the red dot moves forwards, backwards, to the left or right. Three circles in the dial instrument show a graduation of the current G-forces from 0.5 g and 1.0 g to 1.5 g (= gravity acceleration 4.90 m/s², 9.81 m/s², 14.71 m/s²). Motorsport fans will be familiar with this display from the TV reporting of Formula 1 events.

A grey bar shows the maximum acceleration rates achieved since the last reset. In the "History" function the driver can call up a display of the lateral and linear acceleration figures for the last ten minutes. The time of day, steering angle in degrees and vehicle speed are also stored in memory. A screenshot showing the figures is also available, and this can be saved to an external memory via a USB interface.

"Track" menu: personal race engineer on board

An even greater motorsport feeling is provided by the "Track" menu. This mode not only offers various recording possibilities, for example individual lap times on a closed race circuit, but also sector times including an analysis and memory function. In short: "Track" mode places a personal race engineer on board who is able to help the driver to make continuous improvements to his personal race track performance.

Not only the respective lap times are therefore displayed, but also the difference from the fastest lap time. And this is not all: all individual figures such as brake pressure, accelerator position, lateral and linear acceleration can be separately displayed for each lap when in Parameter mode. In conjunction with the individually selectable sector times, the driver is able to see at a glance where his improvement potential lies.

Comparison of up to five completed laps

The matrix display allows up to five laps to be compared. AMG Performance Media saves the absolved racing laps to memory. The driver is able to decide which laps to display. The fastest lap time is shown in green, and the best and worst individual figures in green and red respectively.

The relevant circuit layout is shown graphically, with the Nürburgring North Loop and the Hockenheimring integrated ex factory. New circuits can be individually absolved, named and stored in memory. Lap times and data recorded in Track mode can be saved to a USB stick, enabling the data to be analysed on a PC at home and then reloaded back into the system.

RACE START mode: faster and more convenient than before

RACE START mode is a further function, and its activation is faster and more convenient in conjunction with AMG Performance Media. After selection using the COMAND Controller, a bar chart shows the driver the necessary braking pressure. The driver then only needs to pull the shift paddle in the "Up" direction once to confirm the RACE START function, depress the accelerator fully and release the brakes. Manual preselection using the rotary transmission control is unnecessary, as is activation of ESP® SPORT Handling mode.

designo range and "Edition 1"

The designo range for the SL 63 AMG, available ex factory, offers a wealth of tailor-made individualisation options to cater for practically any requirement. The designo leather and Exclusive designo leather ranges available in eight attractive colours are designed to match both of the designo magno cashmere white and designo magno allanite grey matt paint finishes. designo trim elements in natural bamboo as well as champagne white and black piano lacquer, and also carbon-fibre AMG trim also provide for a very special feel. designo seat belts in silver and red, meanwhile, as well as the designo roof lining in a variety of finishes – including the finest leather – round off the range perfectly.

To mark the launch of the new SL 63 AMG, AMG is also offering the special "Edition 1" model. The "Edition 1" is opulently appointed and includes the following as standard:
- AIRSCARF neck-level heating
- AMG forged light-alloy wheels, painted matt black, rim flange with a high-sheen finish
- AMG Performance package
- designo Exclusive leather in classic red or deep white with black contrasting stitching
- designo headliner in black leather
- harman/kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system
- MAGIC SKY CONTROL panoramic vario-roof

Features exclusive to the "Edition 1" include special designo magno crystal silver paintwork and, if designo Exclusive leather in classic red is specified, contrasting red topstitching on the steering wheel, headliner and dashboard. A set of designo velour floor mats with edging in designo classic red leather round off this exceptional package of appointments.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG: Design and equipment - New AMG brand face

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection
The top-of-the-range AMG model is once again playing a leading role - this time in terms of design. The SL 63 AMG is the first high-performance model to feature the new brand face. The two elements which dominate the form – the radiator grille and the lower cooling air intake – are retained but in reinterpreted form which gives them a more distinctive identity in terms of dynamism and the sense of perceived value they convey. The central styling feature is the new "twin blade" radiator grille in silver chrome. The Mercedes star is mounted on two blade-like louvres whose profile recalls that of an aircraft wing. The more pronounced V-shape of the radiator grille optimises the longitudinal proportions of the vehicle and so adds even greater visual emphasis to the attributes of aerodynamics and purism.

Below the radiator grille with its twin blades, the stylised "A" - a characteristic feature of AMG vehicles - is retained. A gap formed below a fine black fin at the lower edge of the cooling air opening allows optimum airflow over the cooling modules – a perfect combination of aesthetics and high technology. The lower cross strut in the front apron is also finished in silver chrome and is given a perceived sense of depth by the gap above it – a distinctive note which adds the perfect finishing touch to the front of the vehicle. The "twin blade" radiator grille and lower cross strut are the two complementary styling elements which underline the new AMG brand face – a look which will be picked up by the styling of future AMG models and so further increase the recognition value of the AMG performance brand.

AMG bodystyling with characteristic features

The SL 63 AMG boasts classic sports car proportions: the long bonnet, compact passenger compartment set well back, and the powerful rear are all combined skilfully with the characteristic AMG bodystyling features. These include the front apron with black grilles and large openings for engine oil, water, charge air and transmission oil coolers, the side skirt panelling and the exciting profile of the diffuser-style rear apron with body-coloured insert. The standard-specification ILS headlamps are characterised by very high-quality tubes for the low and main beam which have been styled with great attention to detail, plus a chrome bracket surrounding the main headlamp and the flared arrangement of the indicator lamps and sidelights. All of the further functions feature LED technology – such as the distinctively curved sidelights. The surrounds of the special AMG daytime driving lights, the side fins on the wings and the fins on the bonnet have the same silver-chrome finish as the radiator grille and the lower strut in the front apron.

The side profile is dominated by the "V8 BITURBO" logos and the titanium grey-painted 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels with high-sheen finish. The front axle is fitted with 255/35 R 19 tyres on 9.0 x 19 rims, while the rear has 285/30 R 19 tyres on 10 x 19 rims. A highlight at the rear is the AMG sports exhaust system, with its two chromed twin tailpipes integrated into the bumper. The AMG spoiler lip helps to reduce lift on the rear axle while increasing driving stability at high speeds.

Exceptional quality of interior finish

The interior of the SL 63 AMG is characterised by the typical wrap-around effect, as already featured in the CLS 63 AMG: in conjunction with the beltlines on the doors and the parcel shelf, the upper section of the dashboard creates a formal unity. The generous amount of space, high-quality materials, high sense of perceived value and lovingly crafted details displaying tangible and visible precision all exude a sense of ultimate quality. Minimal gap dimensions please the eye and reflect the high precision with which the SL has been produced.

A delight for all of the senses: this comes courtesy of the specific style elements, familiar from the SLS AMG, such as the four air vents in the style of jet engines, the AMG DRIVE UNIT - exclusive to AMG - and the leather-clad E-SELECT selector lever with embossed AMG badge. To the left of the selector lever are three buttons: the front button operates the 3-stage ESP® system, the centre button controls the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, while the rear button with the AMG symbol is used to store personal settings (transmission mode, suspension mode, ESP® function). Pressing briefly on the AMG button enables the configuration options to be called up, while holding down the button longer allows the desired setup to be chosen, as confirmed by means of an audible signal. In addition, pressing a button at any time also displays the chosen setup in the instrument cluster.

AMG main menu and AMG Performance steering wheel

Two tube-shaped round cockpit instruments provide information on engine rpm and tank capacity (left), and road speed and coolant temperature (right). Three-dimensional graduated rings, back-lit dials in the centre of the speedometer and rev counter, AMG-specific red dials and the 360 km/h speedometer scale all add to the emotional appeal. The driver is greeted by an AMG start-up screen which appears in the centrally located three-dimensional TFT colour display. The AMG main menu is also integrated into the central display: three modes of "Warm Up", "Set Up" and "RACE" provide the driver with comprehensive information. "Warm Up" displays the engine oil and coolant temperatures as well as the operating status of the ECO start/stop function; "Set Up" provides information on the current ESP® mode, suspension mode and the transmission modes "C", "S", "S+" or "M". In "RACE" mode, the RACETIMER becomes available. The driver can use this to record lap times on a closed-off racing circuit. The gear display is located above the central display.

A visual and tactile highlight of the interior of the SL 63 AMG is the new AMG Performance steering wheel: specially shaped grip areas finished in perforated leather, together with flattened top and bottom sections, help to ensure perfect control of the vehicle. Aluminium shift paddles enable manual shifting. The bottom end of the galvanised spokes features an AMG logo for the first time. The airbag cover, which has a three-dimensional shape, is finished in nappa leather. Twelve function buttons allow the audio and navigation system, the driver assistance systems, the on-board computer and the AMG main menu to be controlled.

Optional nappa leather in four different colours

First-class comfort on long journeys and high levels of lateral support come courtesy of the electrically-adjustable AMG sports seats. They not only feature a distinct V8 seat upholstery layout and AMG badges on the seat backrests, but also 4-way lumbar support, memory function, seat heating and a multicontour function: this allows the seat cushion length and side bolster support to be adjusted. The nappa leather upholstery covers the armrests in the doors and centre console, and includes stitching and edging in contrasting colours. Optional colours range from black, porcelain and Bengal red, to ginger beige/espresso brown. For an even higher quality ambience, Exclusive nappa leather is also available as an option: it includes a nappa leather finish on the dashboard, door panelling, rear compartment panelling and parcel shelf. Contrasting stitching and a roof lining, including A/C pillars finished in DINAMICA microfibre are also included.

The standard ambient lighting bathes the interior in a pleasant indirect light. Three colours (SOLAR, SOLAR red and SOLAR orange) are available to choose from. The fibre-optic cables offering three colour options are fitted on a level between the beltline and door centre panel, almost along the entire length of the doors, behind the trim for the dashboard and in the front panelling. An exclusive highlight reserved for the SL 63 AMG is the AMG-specific analogue clock, located centrally on the dashboard and featuring an IWC design.

The standard equipment on the SL 63 AMG includes AMG carbon-fibre trim, which affords the interior an appealing motorsport feel. Optionally available at no extra cost are aluminium trim elements with a dark or light longitudinal-grain, and also wood trims in high-gloss black ash, light-brown satin or high-gloss brown finishes.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

An attractive highlight among the optional extras for the SL 63 AMG is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system, as found on the SLS AMG: Mercedes-Benz and AMG have created it in conjunction with famous Danish audio specialists Bang & Olufsen. The sound system enables an exclusive music experience to be enjoyed at the very highest level. The basis of the system is formed not only by the amplifier with a total output of 900 watts and 12 high-end loudspeakers including Frontbass, but also the precise distribution of the music signals, controlled by the sound processor, to the selectable seating positions of driver, front passenger or the central position.

Thanks to the digital sound processor (DSP), it is also possible to choose between the high-end "reference" studio sound and spacious surround sound. All of the functions are operated using the COMAND system via a special Bang & Olufsen menu. Particular highlights include the illuminated lens tweeters on the dashboard – they help to create the characteristic virtual sound stage in front of the vehicle occupants. High-quality aluminium loudspeaker covers finished in silver chrome with the Bang & Olufsen logo give an indication of the exceptional position enjoyed by this high-end system.
