Mercedes-Benz SUVs of the future: GLA, MLC, GLC and more to come

Sports Utility Vehicle will never go old-fashioned or at least not in the next 10 to 15 years. Mercedes-Benz, as inventor of the modern SUV with the first generation M-Class (W 163) back in 1997, has mastered a strategy to increase profitability and revenue, in addition to exploring new fields and attracting new clients towards the brand. The plan is to fill any niche and any gap still left empty with all-rounding models such as crossovers and SUVs in almost all classes and size categories.

The portfolio of Mercedes-Benz is already heavily filled with various SUVs to suit different tastes. The GLK is the dynamic lifestyle to travel around in big cities, the M-Class is the all-time leader and the most faithful business partner, the GL-Class is suitable for those who want to set themselves apart from the crowd and admire true luxury and sheer elegance, the G-Class is for the adventurous client looking for off-road excitement, whereas the R-Class is a one-of-a-kind proposal in the automotive industry, combining the attributes of a modern station wagon, a van and an all-terrain vehicle into a VIP shuttle body of a crossover.

Five distinct models, each having their targeted customer group and clearly defined role, is still not enough, according to the plans we have found out. Mercedes-Benz mulls over several new additions to the fleet in the next years. The first to come out is the all new GLA, company's first compact SUV. Entitled Cross Activity Vehicle (CAV), the new model has already been previewed at the Auto China 2013, where Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Concept GLA. The serial version comes in September at Frankfurt and will basically be fairly similar to the showcar, like the A-Class and CLA-Class in their respective cases. The muscular, yet very dynamic and coupe-ish silhouette, combined with the higher ground clearance and the multiple appointments, will certainly translate into a boost of sales right from the market release of the X 156.

MLC, company's first Sports Utility Coupe, is next on the list. The C 292 project will become reality as soon as late 2014, with production starting at Tuscaloosa the following year. The new MLC-Class will get the underpinnings from the M-Class, but engineers will further tweak the platform to make it sportier and more responsive. Styling will be totally different, with the new rakish roof line setting the model apart from the standard SUV in the lineup. The four-door/four-seat architecture will add a dose of practicality and exclusiveness. The latest breakthroughs in ride management, assistance technology and telematics will find their onto the new SUC from Mercedes-Benz: the upgraded COMAND Online with touchpad, the Head-Up Display, the enhanced ATTENTION ASSIST, the Night View Assist Plus with improved person/animal recognition, the new generation 4MATIC and the state-of-the-art ON&OFFROAD Package available as an option. Most engines to power the new MLC will be brand new. If the petrol choices will consist of efficient BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 units, the diesel version will carry the BlueTEC badge. As the MLC is an upscale niche model, the baseline variant will be the MLC 250 BlueTEC with 211 hp, followed by the MLC 300 with 252 hp and the MLC 350 BlueTEC with 258 hp. Further, the MLC 350 with 306 hp might still be kept for a while, whereas the MLC 400 will reach 333 hp. The range-topping models will be the MLC 500 with 435 hp (or 455 hp) and the MLC 63 AMG with 557 hp coming towards 2016.

In 2015, one year after the 205 series for C-Class is unveiled, the second generation GLK is slated to showcase during spring. The new X 205 will be a complete departure from the current boxy model. A different philosophy will make the GLK look modern and youthful, with barely any direct linkage to the G-Class like the current model has. The new mid-sized SUV will be underpinned by the new MRA rear-wheel-driven platform that will be accomodated to receive the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, which shall be available on most versions except for the entry-level GLKs. From 2016, an SUC will also join the portfolio. The future GLC will follow the footprints of the MLC, which means a coupe greenhouse fitted to a four-door body. The GLC-Class will share the technical equipment with the new GLK, which also borrows its systems and engines from the new C-Class. While AMG models are still in doubt, the new GLK 400 and GLC 400, both boasting a maximum output of 333 hp from a 3.0-litre V6 BlueDIRECT engine, will be the available high-end variants. The new straight-six petrol powerplants with bi- or tri-turbocharging are prone to debut in around three years from now, so probably the current "V" units will then be replaced for the GLK and GLC as well, together with a power boost up to around 360 hp.

We have previously reported on the so-entitled GLG mini-sized city SUV. It seems rumors are intensifying and this all new, retro-styled crossover harking to the G-Class is closer and closer to production form. Last year's ENER-G-FORCE study revealed at the LA Auto Show in November might hint at the design direction adopted for the GLG. Anyway, the new lifestyle crossover will have a total length of exactly 4 meters and will use the MFA chassis, in an adapted variant, from the new GLA. 4MATIC will be an option, otherwise front drive will be the standard architecture for the GLG. The engines will consist of efficient Daimler-Renault developed powerplants; the anticipated 3-cylinder low displacement diesel and gasoline units could also power the GLG beginning with 2017. An AMG version is ruled out at the moment, as the GLG 250 4MATIC with 211 hp and the 7G-DCT automatic gearbox is simply more than enough for the needs of the targeted clients. If it ever gets greenlighted, the baby G-Class should hit streets by mid-2016.

We also suspect Mercedes-Benz is looking at the possibility of releasing a top luxury class SUV in the new S-Class portfolio. With over five meters in length, a high-grade design and bespoke technology from the W 222 generation, the new top 4x4 car should be entitled GLS and concur other exquisite opponents such as the future Bentley and Rolls-Royce SUVs. If such a model gets the approval of the executive board of Daimler AG, then we could witness the appearance of the GLS on streets around 2017 or 2018.

It is still unclear whether Mercedes-Benz will axe the R-Class or it will release a new generation of the model after 2015. Past reports were indicating the future R-Class will be strongly based on the next generation E-Class (W 213) scheduled to bow in around two years. The car would retain the wagon body, but also get more dynamic, appealing and garnished with the latest technology.

This is, all in all, the sketch of the new outlook for the future at Mercedes-Benz. Along with the standard high-volume models like the C-Class and E-Class, the SUV/SUC range will ensure a substantial growth for the Stuttgart-based constructor in the following years. As a consistent part of the Mercedes-Benz 2020 strategy, through which the Germans target the top position in the premium automotive industry by the end of this decade, the new lineup of niche vehicles must be close to perfect, if not fully perfect, to succeed in a world with ever more competitors.

PREVIEW: Future Mercedes-Benz GLK to be more dynamic and fun to drive

The present generation of the GLK-Class was specifically penned in a rugged, boxy shape in order to remember the public about its strong link to the classic G-Class. This approach, otherwise successful and unprecedented in the automotive industry, is about to change beginning with 2015, when a new of the GLK is slated to come into force. Early test mules have already been spotted doing some winter testing in Scandinavia at the start of this year.

The new styling language will be far more progressive and youthful, with the car gaining more presence and dynamism thanks to the sportier silhouette. Hardly any edge, but lots of curves and intricate pieces of modern design will compose the looks of the new GLK, which is also expected to grow in size, at least by 5-10 cm in length (to make room for the future GLA compact crossover), and thus be more spacious inside. However, the new X 205 will not be taller compared to the current X 204 series; in fact, it could well be smaller than it is today because of the general shape of the body, which is rumored to be pretty similar to that of a coupe model.

The new GLK will sit on Merc's brand new rear-wheel-driven technical platform entitled MRA, which will be officially premiered on the forthcoming S-Class and then spreaded across the entire lineup and shall also be used by the upcoming C-Class models (W/S/C 205). However, the SUV will get the modified, 4x4 version of this chassis, with the basic model being the only GLK to feature RWD as standard equipment. The latest generation of the mult-awarded 4MATIC traction system will be available for the X 205, benefiting from the 4ETS electronic AWD management system and further technologies that aim to improve the on-road behaviour, the overall dynamical capabilities and deliver sensational performances in off-road conditions.

Most of the powerplants the new GLK will feature are updated variants of the existing engines. Each and every unit in the range will be fitted with BlueEFFICIENCY technology in order to achieve competitive values for fuel economy and CO2 emission levels. Most probably, there will be more diesel choices, but certainly more than one petrol variants as well. BlueTEC is also a possibility and rumors state a hybrid version could also be considered and destined to appear towards 2016 or 2017. The high-end model, the GLK 350, will boast around 350 hp produced by the 3.5-litre BlueDIRECT V6 engine. No plans for an AMG variant of the mid-sized SUV have been divulged so far, but there's a slight chance we see a top performance GLK with near 400 hp through 2017.

Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen: First new-generation GLK leaves the Customer Center

The new-generation of the GLK has now left the Mercedes-Benz Customer Center in Bremen. Andreas Kellerman, manager of the Mercedes-Benz Bremen Plant, gave Stefan Klug from Frankfurt am Oder, the keys of the compact SUV. In addition to the standard equipment, the vehicle also features Active Parking Assist, including Parktronic and the Intelligent Light System. "We are proud of the new GLK," said Andreas Kellermann. "I am confident the new on- and offroad vehicle will be very well received by customers."

About the new GLK

With a new design, exclusive appointments, pioneering assistance systems and efficient and agile engines, the new generation of the GLK underscores its claim to leadership of the compact SUV market segment. The newly designed exterior lends this car full of character greater poise. The GLK 2012 comes up trumps with a range of state-of-the-art assistance systems and comprehensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures such as the standard-fit ECO start/stop function. BlueTEC diesel emission control is available for the compact SUV for the first time, enabling compliance with the EU6 emissions standard.

About the off-road vehicle trail

The New 2013MY Mercedes-Benz GLK Sport Utility Vehicle Hits the Road

This week, U.S. journalists are test-driving the very first 2013-model Mercedes-Benz GLK sport utility vehicles arriving in the U.S. The Mercedes-Benz GLK has been redesigned for the 2013 model year, with bolder exterior styling, a dramatically restyled interior, and crisp driving dynamics.

The redesign for 2013 involves nearly 1,000 new parts that include bolder front and rear bumpers, new headlights and a more graceful front grille. Inside, the new dash features eyecatching burl walnut trim that now spans the entire width of the cabin as well as shift controls relocated to the steering column.

New Engine, Transmission and Electromechanical Steering

Smaller and lighter than its well-known SUV siblings, the 2013-model GLK is also equipped with a new direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 engine with 302 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, an innovative ECO Start/Stop system, a more fuel-efficient seven-speed automatic transmission with Direct Select and electromechanical steering. A fuel-sipping four-cylinder diesel model, the GLK250 BlueTEC, will arrive early next year.

New Safety Features

A number of innovative Mercedes-Benz safety features are available for the first time on the GLK, including standard ATTENTION ASSIST and optional DISTRONIC PLUS with PRE-SAFE Brake, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. The new electrically assisted steering also makes possible optional Active Parking Assist.

ATTENTION ASSIST Cautions "Time For A Rest?"

Falling asleep at the wheel causes more than 100,000 accidents a year in the U.S., and the ATTENTION ASSIST system can alert drivers to the first signs of drowsiness. Now standard equipment on the 2013 GLK, a steering sensor is coupled to smart software that uses 70 parameters to establish a unique driver profile during the first 20 minutes of driving.

Between 50 and 112 mph, the system identifies the erratic steering corrections drivers make as they begin to get drowsy and triggers an audible warning, and a "Time for a rest?" message with a coffee cup icon appears in the instrument cluster. ATTENTION ASSIST is a great example of new technology that doesn't need to be expensive to save lives.

Blind Spot Assist

A new option for the 2013-model GLK, Blind Spot Assist uses dedicated radar sensors to monitor both blind spots behind the vehicle. Whenever a turn signal is activated with a vehicle in the blind spot, the driver gets visual and audible warnings. A separate option, Active Blind Spot Assist incorporates an intervention feature, in which ESP braking automatically helps correct the car's course if the driver doesn't heed the initial warning.

Lane Keeping Assist

Another new option, Lane Keeping Assist makes use of a special computer to analyze images from a multi-purpose camera in the windshield to recognize lane markings. This system alerts the driver by simulating rumble strip vibrations in the steering wheel if the car drifts from its lane without the turn signals on. A separate option, Active Lane Keeping Assist (as well as Active Blind Spot Assist) incorporates an intervention feature, in which ESP braking automatically helps correct the car's course if the driver doesn't heed the initial warning.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist

Also new for 2013, Adaptive Highbeam Assist uses a windshield-mounted camera to control the vertical tilt of both the low- and high-beam headlights. The system is engaged by turning the headlight switch to "Auto" and turning on the high beam setting. Whenever there are no other vehicles in front, the high beams come on automatically, with the lights increasing gradually rather than suddenly. Since drivers no longer have to think about controlling the high beams, Adaptive Highbeam Assist makes it safer and easier to drive in the dark.

DISTRONIC PLUS with PRE-SAFE® Brake

For the first time on the GLK, an optional DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control system uses radar sensors to help maintain a pre-set following distance behind the vehicle ahead. The system can actually brake the car to a full stop and accelerate it again. DISTRONIC PLUS works at speeds up to 125 mph and can be especially helpful in stop-and-go traffic.

Short-range 24-gigahertz radar sweeps the first 66 yards in a fan-shaped 60-degree pattern, working in tandem with a narrower 18-degree beam of 77-gigahertz radar. The two radar frequencies complement each other to cover a full range of more than 220 yards - longer than two football fields.

All cars equipped with the optional radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS system reap the benefit of another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature - PRE-SAFE® Brake. To reduce accident severity, the latest version of PRE-SAFE Brake applies full braking automatically in emergencies.

When PRE-SAFE Brake senses an impending collision with the help of DISTRONIC PLUS, the system sounds three warning tones. About 1.6 seconds before impact is likely, partial braking is automatically initiated, and PRE-SAFE occupant protection measures are activated. If the driver still fails to react, full-power braking is initiated 0.6 seconds before the collision, reducing the impact and effectively acting as an "electronic crumple zone."

PARKTRONIC

Also optional, PARKTRONIC uses six ultra-sound sensors in the front bumper and four in the rear bumper to detect obstacles in the system's field of view. The system provides audible warnings and displays the proximity of obstacles using bar graph displays - one on the center dashboard for the front and another for the rear that's visible in the rear-view mirror.

Active Parking Assist

The new electro-mechanical steering assist helps make the GLK a very dynamic SUV, and also makes possible Advanced Parking Assist, which works with PARKTRONIC to provide stress-free parallel parking. Below about 20 mph, a "P" icon appears in the dash to show that an electronic parking space search is active. Whenever a parking space is found that's at least one meter (39.4 inches) longer than the car, an arrow appears next to the "P" icon. When reverse is engaged and the driver confirms Advance Parking Assist is desired, the system initiates automatic steering as the driver controls acceleration and braking at speeds below 7 mph. The system can provide up to five corrections, after which the wheels are straightened.

If the car is parked using Active Parking Assist, the system can also provide a helpful automatic exit feature. When "D" or "R" is engaged, the car asks whether the driver wants automatic exiting. If the driver says "yes," the system steers automatically to exit the parking space, while the driver controls the accelerator and brake.

Mid-Size Member of the Mercedes-Benz SUV Family

Classed as a mid-size SUV, the GLK is a key member of the successful Mercedes-Benz SUV family that includes the full-size M-Class, which spurred the trend toward more car-like SUVs, as well as the larger GL-Class and the rough-and-tough G-Class. The Mercedes-Benz GLK is just the right size for today's active couple, whether they're making a cross-country trip or running errands across town.

The Right Size for Today's Active Couple

About 10 inches shorter than the M-Class, the GLK is also a few inches shorter than its primary competition - the Acura RDX, Infiniti EX and Lexus RX as well as European models such as the BMW X3 and the Land Rover LR2. At first glance, the GLK appears to be a smaller version of the GL, but a closer look reveals a modern interpretation of the iconic GClass. In sharp contrast to the relatively soft forms of other similar vehicles, the striking, angular nose of the GLK sets it apart from the competition. From its steeply raked windshield to the integrated rear spoiler on its tightly styled roof section, the bullish shape of the GLK suggests power and agility.

One of the Most Fuel-Efficient Mercedes-Benz Vehicles Ever

Following its 2009 debut in the small sport-utility category, the new GLK became one of the most fuel-efficient Mercedes-Benz vehicles ever produced, and it's also the most agile member of the Mercedes SUV family. With available 4MATIC full-time four-wheel drive and respectable ground clearance for off-road driving, its optional integrated running boards, roof rack and skid plates emphasize the versatile SUV character of the GLK.

Agility and Comfort

Smaller and lighter than its well-known SUV siblings, the Mercedes-Benz GLK brings a special combination of agility and comfort to the SUV market. Like nearly all Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles, the GLK features four-wheel independent suspension worthy of a sports sedan.

Standard Agility Control suspension provides the benefits of both soft and stiff shock absorbers. Each twin-tube shock absorber is fitted with a hydraulic by-pass piston that acts like a very soft shock absorber to effectively dampen road noise and tire vibration. However, over bumpy or uneven roads, the by-pass piston is out of the picture, preserving the outstanding steering and handling response of a stiffer shock absorber.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class - Comprehensive Technical Information

INTRODUCTION

The Mercedes-Benz GLK sport utility has been redesigned for the 2013 model year with nearly 1,000 new parts. The exterior features bolder styling, while the interior reveals more contemporary upholstery and a new dash that emphasizes the width of the cabin.

Smaller and lighter than its well-known SUV siblings, the 2013-model GLK is also equipped with a new direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 engine with ECO Start/Stop, a more fuel-efficient seven-speed automatic transmission with Direct Select and electro-mechanical steering. A number of innovative safety features are available for the first time on the GLK, including standard ATTENTION ASSIST and optional DISTRONIC PLUS with PRE-SAFE Brake, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.

Newest Star of the Mercedes-Benz SUV Family

Classed as a mid-size SUV, the GLK is a key member of the successful Mercedes-Benz SUV family that includes the full-size M-Class, which spurred the trend toward more car-like SUVs, as well as the larger GL-Class and the rough-and-tough G-Class. About 10 inches shorter than the M-Class, the GLK is also a few inches shorter than its primary competition - the Acura RDX, Infiniti EX and Lexus RX as well as European models such as the BMW X3, the Audi Q5 and the Land Rover LR2.

The Right Size for Today's Active Couple

At first glance, the GLK appears to be a smaller version of the GL, but a closer look reveals a modern interpretation of the iconic G-Class. In sharp contrast to the relatively soft forms of other similar vehicles, the striking, angular nose of the GLK sets it apart from the competition. From its steeply raked windshield to the integrated rear spoiler on its tightly styled roof section, the bullish shape of the GLK suggests power and agility. At the same time, the GLK is just the right size for today's active couple, whether it's parking in town while running errands or making a cross-country trip.

One of the Most Fuel-Efficient Mercedes-Benz Vehicles Ever

Following its 2009 debut in the small sport-utility category, the new GLK became one of the most fuel-efficient Mercedes-Benz vehicles ever produced, and it's also the most agile member of the Mercedes SUV family. Like nearly all Mercedes passenger vehicles, the GLK features four-wheel independent suspension worthy of a sports car. With available 4MATIC full-time four-wheel drive and respectable ground clearance for off-road driving, its optional running boards, roof rack and skid plates emphasize the versatile SUV character of the GLK.

Impressive Interior Design and Safety Technology

Inside, the GLK has all the impressive design ambiance and safety technology of Mercedes- Benz cars. Standard equipment includes front, side, curtain and pelvic air bags as well as a knee air bag for the driver. With the curtain air bags covering front and rear seating positions, the GLK provides 11-way air bag protection. Much as the latest C-Class sedan has brought a new level of sporty driving and ride comfort to the sedan world, the GLK sport utility brings a new combination of agility and comfort to the SUV market. The GLK also broadens and extends the Mercedes-Benz sport utility line with cutting-edge engine and fourwheel- drive technology packaged in a stylish, fuel-efficient vehicle that's the perfect size for today's active couple.

Exterior

About a half inch longer and nearly an inch lower, the GLK for 2013 features bolder exterior styling at the front and rear that emphasizes its familiar angular character. Its width has been further accentuated, and new lights underscore its quality image. Although the midsize SUV bears an obvious family resemblance to its larger GL sibling, the GLK is more a contemporary reinterpretation of the rough-and-tough G-Class. An angular hood differentiates it from the soft, rounded lines of other similar-sized vehicles, and yet the GLK boasts wind-cheating, fuel-saving aerodynamics.

Bolder Bumpers

For 2013, the front and rear bumpers are sleeker, with new standard LED daytime running lights in front that sit below redesigned headlights, which reinterpret the flared design used in other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The GLK radiator grille features two bold slats that bracket the centrally mounted star logo more gracefully and echo the latest design language of other Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

A wider rear bumper gives the vehicle a more youthful look, with its chrome exhaust tip integrated in the rear apron. The roof rails were also redesigned, and fiber optic cables and LEDs enhance the rear lights, giving the new tail lights a unique grid pattern at night. In addition, even the GLK license plate lighting makes use of eye-catching, long-life LED technology.

Taut Lines and Rounded Surfaces

Overall, the design language of the latest GLK features the interplay between taut lines and broad, rounded surfaces. Its two-box proportions includes short overhangs (for steeper approach and departure angles), while a sharp-edged nose, steeply raked windshield and sweeping roof lines make it clear that the GLK is a tough, practical sport utility vehicle. Its proportionately large wheels and tires complete the picture, also helping to increase ground clearance and off-road capability.

Interior

The interior design of the GLK complements its exterior styling. With the shift lever moved to the steering column for 2013, first impressions focus on its more spacious center console, broad interior width and the use of high-quality materials with contemporary surface treatment. The redesigned interior of the GLK includes a new dash with eye-catching burl walnut trim that spans the entire width of the dash. With new round air vents, the dash trim visually enhances the width of the cabin.

For 2013, the ambient lighting used on other Mercedes-Benz vehicles is optionally available on the GLK for the first time, and its use includes a line along the length of the dashboard trim.

A sturdy, high-quality synthetic leather called M-B Tex is standard, while optional leather includes new door panels with diagonal stitching. A new 4.5-inch color display screen in the instrument cluster, redesigned eight-way power seats and a three-spoke leather steering wheel with shift paddles underscore the updated interior. Also available are comfort head restraints, which can be adjusted at the side bolsters for ideal comfort and side support.

Quality Equipment

Standard equipment includes two-zone automatic climate control, power windows with express up and down, a tilt-telescoping steering column and cruise control. Complete with a cargo cover, the rear seat folds flat for an ample 54.7 cubic feet of cargo space, and a power liftgate is optional. Some of the other convenience options include a memory system that can recall the positions of the front seats and the steering column, an integrated garage door opener, auto-dimming mirrors and a Panorama sunroof.

What Looks Good, Feels Good

In large part, the high-quality appearance of the interior is the result of a special production process that leaves a seamless surface with no lines or joints. Robots spray a foamed surface skin onto the dash backing; this polyurethane skin is soft to the touch and can be thicker or thinner as needed.

Finished the same way for a uniform, high-quality appearance, a large glove box holds a power socket and an aux plug for the car's audio system. Blending into the lines of the dash and the tunnel console, the center console holds panels for the audio system and climate control, along with switches for other equipment such as heated seats. The glove box, front passenger air bag and center console are attached to an aluminum cross member that minimizes resonance and vibration. Lighter than a comparable steel one, this cross member is bolted to the A-pillars, giving them added strength in the process.

Now that the steering column holds the Direct Select shift lever, there's even more storage room on the center console. In addition to ample cup holders, a central controller is also located on the tunnel console as well as a hand rest that's contoured to provide helpful support when operating the controller.

Electronic Controller Instead of a Zillion Buttons

A standard-equipment 5.8-inch color display sits at the top center of the dash. Similar to the popular system launched on the top-of-the-line S-Class sedan and CL coupe, the electronic controller on the lower console works like a computer mouse to provide easy, quick operation of many functions that used to require scores of separate buttons and switches. By turning and pressing the aluminum controller, menus and sub-menus are displayed and selected for the audio system as well as the optional navigation system and integrated phone. These systems are also linked to the rocker switches on the multifunction steering wheel.

A High-Performance Instrument Cluster

The instrument cluster features three analog gauges that show engine speed, road speed, fuel level and coolant temperature. A new 4.5-inch color display in the center of the speedometer is linked to the multi-function steering wheel that can call up a variety of helpful information such as odometer, range, oil level, distance, time traveled and average speed and mpg. It can also display phone and audio system information - radio station, CD track or MP3 playlist. If the car is equipped with the optional COMAND navigation system, this display will also show next-turn directions or phone book numbers.

ECO Display

For the first time, the screen in the center of the speedometer can display an active fuel economy gauge, which helps the driver get the best possible gas mileage. In the fuel economy gauge, three bar graphs (labeled accelerate, maintain speed and coast) begin at the halfway point, and will decrease under heavy acceleration and frequent braking as well as increase when the car is coasting with no brakes on. All three bar graphs are topped out when the driver attains ideal fuel economy.

Concert-Hall Audio

Standard equipment in the GLK is a 100-watt, six-speaker audio system with an AM / FM / weatherband radio, single-CD slot and a Bluetooth interface. For the first time, the speakers use plastic membranes for better sound quality and improved durability. A MusicRegister feature enables CD "ripping" (saving) to a 40-gigabyte hard drive. A Gracenote database automatically identifies each track with its title, artist, album name and other information. The GLK can be equipped with optional SIRIUS-XM Satellite Radio, an iPod / MP3 media interface and a 115-volt power outlet.

Also optionally available is a harman/kardon LOGIC7 Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 discrete multichannel, surround-sound system, delivering 450 watts of true studio sound experience. The LOGIC7 system comes with 12 speakers, including two surround-sound speakers and a subwoofer.

Bluetooth Integrated Phones

Bluetooth-enabled phones connect wirelessly to a standard hands-free system, which facilitates safe cell phone use while driving. The audio system is automatically muted during calls, and phone conversations make use of the audio speakers and two microphones built into the rear-view mirror. Call lists and phone address books can be shown in the instrument cluster display or the COMAND screen.

COMAND Navigation

The optional COMAND navigation system features a hard drive with map data covering all of North America. In addition to the high-resolution map display at the top of the center console, next-turn navigation instructions can also be shown in the instrument cluster central display. The navigation system is part of a Multimedia option package that includes enhanced voice control and a rearview camera that displays the area behind the vehicle whenever it's in reverse.

KEYLESS-GO

An optional KEYLESS-GO system uses several transceiver antennas in the car to sense the presence of the SmartKey fob. As long as the driver has the fob in a pocket or bag, gently pulling one of the door handles unlocks the car.

The driver starts the car by depressing the brake pedal and touching a button on the dash. KEYLESS-GO also makes it impossible to lock the keys in the trunk. If the keys are dropped into the trunk and the lid closed, the lid will automatically pop open in a few seconds.

PARKTRONIC

Also optional, PARKTRONIC uses six ultra-sound sensors in the front bumper and four in the rear bumper to detect obstacles in the system's field of view. The system provides audible warnings and displays the proximity of obstacles using bar graph displays - one on the center dashboard for the front and another for the rear that's visible in the rear-view mirror.

Active Parking Assist

The new electro-mechanical steering assist makes possible Advanced Parking Assist, which works with PARKTRONIC to provide stress-free parallel parking. Below about 20 mph, a "P" icon appears in the dash to show that an electronic parking space search is active. Whenever a parking space is found that's at least one meter (39.4 inches) longer than the car, an arrow appears next to the "P" icon.

When reverse is engaged and the driver confirms Advance Parking Assist is desired, the system initiates automatic steering as the driver controls acceleration and braking at speeds below 7 mph. The system can provide up to five corrections, after which the wheels are straightened.

Automatic Parking Exit

If the car is parked using Active Parking Assist, the system can also provide a helpful automatic exit feature. When "D" or "R" is engaged, the car asks whether the driver wants automatic exiting. If the driver says "yes," the system steers automatically to exit the parking space, while the driver controls the accelerator and brake.

Production of the new-generation GLK commences at the Mercedes-Benz Plant in Bremen

The first unit of the new-generation GLK rolled off the line at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen on the 1st of June. The compact SUV was launched in April at the New York International Auto Show. The GLK comes with a redesigned exterior and several new equipments. "Our compact SUV is a hit: siince its launch in 2008, we have sold over 270,000 units," said Andreas Keller, Head of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. "We have perfectly integrated the new GLK in our production scheme. It is being built - like its predecessor - on the same production line as the sedan, the estate and the coupe variants of the C-Class lineup."

With a new design, upscale trim level, trailblazing assistance systems and efficient engines, the new-generation GLK highlights its leadership within the market segment of compact SUVs. The redesigned exterior delivers a more dynamic character. It combines both classic and modern elements found in the design of the current Mercedes-Benz sedans. The GLK comes packed with a range of modern assistance systems and extensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures like the standard ECO start-stop. For the first time in a GLK, the BlueTEC diesel emission control meets the stringent EU6 emission standard. From 29 June 2012, the new GLK is available for customers.

With more than 12,800 employees, the Bremen plant is the largest private employer in the region. Eight models are currently produced at this site: the C-Class sedan, the C-Class station wagon and the C-Coupe with the Black Series version of the C 63 AMG Coupe, the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, the GLK and both SLK and SL roadsters. More than ever before, the plant has produced over 313 000 vehicles in 2011. Last year, the market research firm J.D. Power and Associates has awarded the facility an official prize for its production quality and declared it the best passenger car production plant in Europe. In the future, the site will play an important role in the Mercedes-Benz development network: the next generation C-Class is the work of this center of excellence for high-volume series.
