Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks provides 110 Zetros vehicles to the Germany army for logistic operations. In May 2012, the two partners, the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) and Daimler AG, signed a corresponding agreement. This year, 25 all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Zetros trucks will be handed over to the army. The remaining 85 units will be delivered by July 2014.

The vehicles can be delivered quickly, largely thanks to the construction concept which comprises four wheel drive vehicle hood components. In the five-ton payload class, the proven high-volume Mercedes-Benz Zetros trucks were the only to boast a bonneted cabin architecture and a four-wheel-driven technical configuration, thus fully meeting the requirements of the armed forces.

The bonneted 4x4 Zetros 1833A model is specially designed to operate in rough terrain. Powertrain and chassis are derived from the large-scale production of other Mercedes-Benz trucks. Thus the substitute care through the worldwide Mercedes-Benz service organization is entirely ensured. The 6-cylinder inline diesel engine OM 926 LA develops a maximum output of 326 hp / 240 kW and reaches a peak torque of 1,300 Nm. The fully automatic transmission has six forward gears and the tensile forces transferred permanently and without interruption to the two driven axles.

The arrangement of the drivetrain and the hood design creates a low overall height of the vehicle. The protected cabin, located behind the front axle provides the crew two full seats and storage space for their equipment and communication facilities.
