For the second consecutive year, Mercedes-Benz is the automotive partner of the Open Championship, to be held this year at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in England from 19th-22nd of July. “It is a great honour for us to be recognised as ‘Official Car of The Open Championship’, further strengthening public awareness of the close links between golf and Mercedes-Benz all around the world”, says Lueder Fromm, Director Global Marketing Communication Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Communication activities at the event will focus on the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, which celebrates its world premiere during the Formula One weekend at the Hockenheimring. The CLS Shooting Brake and Mercedes-Benz international golf brand ambassador Adam Scott will appear together in print, broadcast and online advertisements as well as facebook.com/MercedesBenzGolf.

“Darren Clarke, the defending champion, arrived at the course in the CLS Shooting Brake to ceremonially deliver the Claret Jug back to Peter Dawson, CEO, the R&A”, says Lueder Fromm. ”And Adam Scott will be using the CLS Shooting Brake throughout the week as a dedicated car”, he continues.

Spectators will also be able to see the CLS Shooting Brake for themselves in the Mercedes-Benz display. Other vehicles in the on-course display will include the new SL, the new M-Class, the new A-Class and the Concept Style Coupé, heralding the arrival of a new four-door coupé in the mid-range segment. Mercedes-Benz will be providing the official shuttle service for The Open Championship with 60 vehicles, featuring a fleet of eco-friendly S 350 BlueTEC. A further 40 vehicles will also be made available to the R&A for their invited guests.

“Drive to the Major”

In 1989, the MercedesTrophy was created as a global series of premium tournaments for amateurs, and as part of this, all entrants worldwide can participate in the “Drive to the Major” competition. Qualifiers compete on a local Links Course during the Open Championship to win one of the treasured spots for the Monday After Event, held immediately after the Open Championship, on the same course where golf legends and professionals were competing the day before. They will also be able to spend an unforgettable week at the Open Championship as Mercedes-Benz guests, and meet brand ambassadors Adam Scott and Marcel Siem.

Mercedes-Benz and Golf

Mercedes-Benz has been involved in the professional golfing world since the 1980s, and is now proud to be the automotive partner at three majors: the Masters in Augusta (from 2008), the PGA Championship (from 2010) and the Open Championship (since 2011). Mercedes-Benz also supports a wide range of amateur and professional golf events worldwide.

The Australian golf player and Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador Adam Scott will be playing this week in the 141st Open Championship – the world's oldest golf tournament, and the only major not held on US soil. And for the second consecutive year, Mercedes-Benz will be there as “Official Car of the Open Championship”. As a highlight in the lead-up to the event, Mercedes-Benz racing driver David Coulthard surprised Adam Scott with a drive in the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, due to celebrate its world premiere in a few days' time.

During a quick spin through the picturesque Lancashire countryside, the duo talked about their two shared passions: Mercedes-Benz cars and golf. “It was fantastic. What a surprise to be picked up by David Coulthard and driven out to the golf course. Just to spend some time with him, what he had to say and listen to him talk about driving”, said Adam Scott with enthusiasm.

Then Adam Scott had to take his leave to continue training for the Open, giving David Coulthard some time to pay a visit to the historic Royal Lytham & St Anne's Golf Club.

David Coulthard was impressed by the new CLS Shooting Brake: “I love the fact that Mercedes-Benz are always coming out with new concepts. And I think the CLS Shooting Brake as a concept works. Because you have something which is very sporty looking, but equally it can be used for everyday driving. And of course it has the space that you want in this type of class of car.”
