Results of the study “ELAB – Electric mobility and employment” presented: Alternative drive concepts offer opportunities in the automotive sector

The technological change in the automotive industry with a growing share of alternative drive trains generally offers opportunities for jobs in the automotive sector. This is the key finding of the “ELAB” study, the first broad-based, practice-oriented analysis of the effects of technological change in the automotive industry on employment. “ELAB” stands for “Auswirkungen der Elektrifizierung des Antriebsstrangs auf Beschäftigung und Standortumgebung”, German for “effects of the powertrain electrification on employment and the business environment”. The study’s key findings were presented and explained today in Stuttgart by all parties involved in the project.

The study examines the employment impact of various “green” drive concepts, which from today’s perspective will be represented in the market in 2030. Based on four market scenarios – each with a different mix of the various drive concepts – predictions are made for employment opportunities in the entire automotive value chain. As a consequence the entire automotive industry will benefit from the findings of the study.

The research project was initiated by the General Works Council of Daimler AG and started in December 2010 together with Daimler, IG Metall Baden-Württemberg (Industrial Union of Metal Workers) and the Hans Böckler Foundation. The Fraunhofer IAO, the IMU Institute and the Institute for Vehicle Concepts of the German Aerospace Center were commissioned with the research.


Premises of the study


The researchers defined six different drive concepts and their components as essential for the future and examined them in detail: the mild hybrid, the full hybrid including its plug-in version, the so-called range extender, all-electric vehicles with battery or fuel cell as well as vehicles with combustion engines.


An exact forecast of the actual market development of future drive concepts by 2030 is not possible. For this reason the study bases the employment forecast on four different market scenarios; a likely reference scenario from today’s perspective as well as three extreme scenarios.
In doing so, the study takes into account the uncertainty of the future development. Each scenario assumes a different speed of transition from the combustion engine to various “green” technologies. 

Results of the study


All scenarios forecast a growing share of alternative drives and yet a continued significant market share of combustion engines. The coexistence of several different drive concepts will result in at least steady to intermittently rising employment in the industry as analysis of the studied value chain shows. The study finds that there may be profound changes within the value chain.


Since the complex development and production of electric cars is currently still characterised by market uncertainties, business and economic risks for manufacturers and suppliers also must be taken into consideration. The technological change will also lead to new production flows and technologies. Heretofore unused or completely new manufacturing methods will be employed.
Employee qualification requirements will change accordingly. This profound change in the manufacturing job world means employer and employee representatives must define future employee skills and qualification requirements and anchor them in daily job routine by means of appropriate training and continuing education.

The study results now in hand offer all corporate, societal and political participants a sound basis for a continued proactive shaping of the change process and dialogue on this key issue for the future.


Statements from the project participants


Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Spath, Head of Institute Fraunhofer IAO, summarizes the results of the “ELAB” study: “With regard to the electrification of the powertrain, jobs will not only be created in research and development, but also in manufacturing. Powertrain manufacturers capable of producing conventional and also non-conventional powertrain components competitively will be able to count on at least steady employment in each of the analysed market scenarios”.


Wilfried Porth, Board Member for Human Resources and Director of Labour Relations at Daimler: “The transition of the drive technologies from the combustion engine to new drive concepts will run on several parallel tracks for a very long time. From an HR policy perspective this means sufficient employment potentials will still exist in the future. Overall, the companies - and by extension we as Daimler as well – will examine in detail which scopes to produce ourselves and which ones might potentially be realised in an economically and technologically practical manner by using cooperative ventures. Furthermore there are demands for in-house qualification as well as for professional training, with which we at Daimler cope successfully for quite some time already. But there will be challenges in this area that go beyond what the companies can provide on their own”.


Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Board Member for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: “Sustainability must be a global requirement. But in order for alternative drive technologies to become accepted on a broad base by the market, everybody must pull together. And if policy makers at the same time create stabile and fair general conditions for the customers, we will succeed together in substantially shaping the next era of individual mobility from within Germany”.


Erich Klemm, Chairman of the General Works Council at Daimler: “The positive employment forecasts of the ELAB study are gratifying. However, this does not imply any statement on how secure the jobs are in existing powertrain manufacturing plants respectively in regional automotive clusters. This is decided by the companies in determining the vertical level of manufacturing integration and regional production structures. On the corporate level we will continue our on-going efforts to ensure that electric mobility will become an opportunity for the Daimler AG workforce and not a risk”.


Jörg Hofmann, District Manager of IG Metall Baden-Württemberg: “The market scenario that prevails will shape the changes within the value chain and consequently the quantitative and qualitative effects on employment. Whether this structural change will take place in a socially viable way and will even provide opportunities for qualified employment, or whether it acts as a job killer for workforces and the region depends on the investment decisions regarding production sites and products. The opportunities for the automobile cluster Baden-Württemberg are good – capitalizing on them is the responsibility of all participants”.


Dr. Jürgen Dispan, Project Manager and scientist at the IMU Institute: “The production of hybrid and electric cars will also change qualification requirements, which will necessitate appropriate education strategies for manufacturing and assembly employees. An important part of this is qualification for ‘dealing with high-voltage systems’. Expanded skills requirements for production employees also arise from the optimisation of the combustion engine. The industrialisation of the new components of the electric powertrain can only succeed in Germany with qualified specialists – and by achieving that, employment and value creation can be safeguarded”.


Prof. Dr.-Ing. Horst E. Friedrich, Director of the Institute for Vehicle Concepts at the German Aerospace Center: “By 2030 a multitude of electrified vehicle concepts will exist side by side in the market. Vehicles driven solely by combustion engines will continue to account for a large market share. The continuously increasing electrification of the powertrain in the form of mild, full and plug-in hybrids will ultimately result in purely battery-powered vehicles also gaining market relevance”.


Dr. Nikolaus Simon, Head of the Management Board of the Hans Böckler Foundation: “We thank all researchers and sponsors of the ELAB study. There now are scientifically valuable as well as practically relevant project results available. This type of project will become a fixture in the foundation’s research sponsorship”.

Carinthia, Austria: The Unimog U 500 is the ideal all-seasons partner throughout the Grossglockner region

The Carinthian government’s Competence Centre 9 is responsible for building and maintaining Carinthia’s entire network of state roads, bridges and cycle paths, including buildings and structures connected to the network. It has now put a Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 500 with all-wheel steering, complete snow blower-cutters and two high-performance mowers into operation. This combination is designed to ensure that the constant maintenance work on the roads in the challenging high mountain region can be carried out reliably throughout the entire year.

In order to improve road maintenance, an agreement has been concluded for the first time between the state of Carinthia and Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG (Grohag), governing joint use of the Unimog and "its" apparatus.

Speaking in recognition of the close cooperation, state governor Gerhard Dörfler says: "The Unimog increases the level of utilisation of the apparatus considerably because, as a result of the modernisation and the high-capacity utilisation of the fleet all year round, the costs are optimised for both contracting parties." Grohag Chairman Dr Johannes Hörl explains further: "For both partners this means an optimum use of funds, which could be followed by further examples in the future."


Georg Pappas Automobil AG, which is responsible for sales of Wörther implement carriers in Austria, cites as critical reasons for this particularly demanding use of the Unimog, its all-wheel-drive manoeuvrability, its high output per unit area and the environment, which plays a major role in this sensitive high-alpine region. "Thanks to the Euro 5 engine with an impressive 210 kW/286 hp power rating, hydrostatic traction drive and economical fuel consumption, with the Unimog we are able to realise an important environmental aspect, while at the same time reliably guaranteeing even the most complex all-terrain use both on the road and off-road all through the year," says Dipl.-Ing. (grad. eng.) Manfred Prentner from Competence Centre 9. "Downtimes and tool changeover times are minimal, which is a huge advantage for us."


High-performance mowing working in the summer months


From spring through to autumn, extensive mowing and maintenance work is announced along the roughly 2746 kilometres of roads in the road network in the state of Carinthia, together with a further 48 km in the area for which Grohag has responsibility. The long winter period has left its mark on many roads, which must be quickly repaired by both partners and kept in good condition during the summer tourist season. On account of its low overall height and the fact it is professionally equipped with a Unimog mowing door, a Mulag verge mower MRM 300 and a rear-boom mower MHU 800, the U 500 is perfectly suited for mowing out to distances of up to 7.3 m, measured from the centre of the vehicle. Thorough mowing results are achieved both to the left and right of the road, and it can even be operated by just one person.


The mowers also work very close to bridge pillars and guide posts, since the automatic sensor guides the mower head around all obstacles. The mowing speed for the obstacle-avoidance movements is continuously adjustable.


A quick-change device and "gearlock", a manual turning gear for implements, allow implements to be changed quickly. That is particularly important because, in addition to verge embankment mowers and clear cutting work, the Carinthian state government and Grohag are also responsible for sewer flushing work, sweeper jobs and front-loading tasks as part of the Unimog’s day-to-day work – meaning that the U 500 implement carrier is used to full capacity throughout the entire summer.


No "winter break" for the Unimog


The Carinthian state government uses the Unimog throughout the entire winter service period to remove the vast quantities of snow that accumulate in the Austrian Alps, often from as early as October right through to late May. Clearing, ploughing and spreading salt, but also cutting and blowing, for example to remove side walls – these are the Unimog’s typical jobs, which the orange-red all-rounder is predestined for during winter use. A new feature is that the Unimog is equipped with an asymmetrically arranged Kahlbacher snow blower-cutter KFS 950/2600, which is equipped with a swivelling blower housing. This enables clearing widths of up to 2600 mm, clearing heights of up to 1300 mm and show ejection distances of up to 30 m.


This equipment makes the Unimog’s features especially important for the all-year-round clearing of spring snow and mountain passes around the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Every year, Grohag has to remove up to 700,000 ccm of snow from roads and car parks. If this volume of snow were to be loaded onto a goods train, the train would be roughly 200 km long and would stretch from Salzburg to Klagenfurt. To accomplish this mammoth task, in addition to the tried-and-trusted Wallack rotary plough system, Grohag now also relies on the potential and the active support of the U 500.


The Carinthian government’s Competence Centre 9


The state government of Carinthia includes 10 Competence Centres. Competence Centre 9, which is based in Klagenfurt, guarantees road safety in the whole of Carinthia with comprehensive planning, new construction and maintenance work and always acts with a particular consideration for the environment. The fleet at the Competence Centre includes 55 Unimog implement carriers, 71 trucks and 126 light-duty vans.


Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG (Grohag)


Founded in the 1920s, Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG operates the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, a road that is 48 km long, has 36 sharp bends and at its highest point – the Edelweißspitze – reaches a proud 2571 m. It is also a modern tourism attraction, ranking as one of the top three points of interest in Austria with approximately 900,000 visitors a year. In addition to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the company also operates the Gerlos Alpine Road with the WasserWunderWelt aquatic theme park in Krimml, the Nockalm Road, the Villach Alpine Road and the Goldeck Panoramic Road. Grohag is one of the most important economic factors in Carinthia and employees more than 100 people during the summer months.

The new Mercedes-Benz GL-Class - added value at no extra cost: First-class offering in the SUV segment

The market launch of the new GL-Class will provide customers with three models to choose from: the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC with V6 diesel engine, the V8 petrol-engined GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, and the high-performance GL 63 AMG variant with V8 biturbo petrol engine. The new models now come with a wide variety of equipment as standard which was either not available, or only available at additional cost, on the preceding model. With prices starting at €60,900 (€72,471 incl. VAT) for the entry-level model, the new GL also boasts some extremely attractive pricing.

According to Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Board Member of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Sales & Marketing: "The new GL provides more comfort, more safety, and more efficiency than its predecessor and at the same time is even more attractive then ever. With this model Mercedes-Benz is continuing the success story of the GL-Class, something which is also reflected in the sales figures for the current models: in the first five months of the year more units of the GL have been sold than ever before during this period (+14.8%)."

Customers of the GL-Class will enjoy double the benefits when opting for the new model. To begin with, the luxury vehicles for on-road and off-road use now feature an extended range of standard equipment. And on top of this, both the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY are being launched with a significant customer benefit of up to €4000. The extensive standard equipment includes a number of comfort details such as electric sliding sunroof, electrically operated EASY-PACK tailgate, EASY ENTRY system for convenient access to the third row of seats from both sides, high-insulation windscreen or electromechanical steering. In the interior, the scope of standard equipment comprises a colour screen with photo-realistic display and dashboard finished in ARTICO man-made leather.


Additional safety comes courtesy of the now standard assistance systems. The new generation of the GL supports the driver with the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST* collision warning system, and ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system. Helping to reduce the burden on the driver significantly when driving at the limits of what is physically possible are systems which detect the load for example, or Steer Assist which supports the driver with a steering moment on the steering wheel in the event of the vehicle oversteering. One of the new GL’s innovations and highlights is the standard-fit Crosswind Assist, which helps the driver by targeted brake actuation if the vehicle is affected by sudden crosswinds.


In addition, the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY also offers Active Parking Assist including PARKTRONIC, the Intelligent Light System, the KEYLESS-GO access and drive authorisation system, 3-zone THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control and multicontour leather seats for driver and front passenger including massage function.


Not to be overlooked as part of the added-value details fitted as standard are also the new engines. They boast better performance with increased output and torque, while at the same time enabling a reduction in consumption levels of up to 20 percent to be achieved. As a result, the 190 kW (258 hp) GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC achieves an NEDC consumption of 7.4 l/100 km. The V8 petrol model, the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, produces 320 kW (435 hp) and powerful torque levels of 700 Nm while consuming just 11.3 l/100 km (NEDC).


Tailor-made off-road equipment


GL customers will also be delighted with the exceptional capabilities of the vehicle when it comes to driving off the beaten track too. With 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, a special off-road transmission mode and Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), Mercedes-Benz is ensuring that the necessary off-road performance is on hand to help make any off-road excursion is trouble-free.
Meanwhile, those looking to tackle the harshest of off-road terrain can order the ON&OFFROAD package with step-down ratio and central lock. With this, six specific transmission modes optimise the performance capabilities of the vehicle both on and off the road.

DTM Norisring 2012: Thriller of a race, final lap, final corner - Jamie Green wins

Jamie Green (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) won the fifth DTM race of the 2012 season in Nuremberg by a margin of 0.687 seconds, after overtaking Martin Tomczyk (BMW) in spectacular style on the latest corner at the final lap. This was Green’s eighth victory in his DTM career and his fourth at the Norisring, i.e. half of his winner’s trophies have been collected at this one venue (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012). It was also the Englishman’s 19th podium in 79 DTM outings.

The Norisring fixture has proved to be the most productive on the race calendar for Mercedes-Benz. Green’s latest win was also the 15th for Mercedes on this street circuit in Nuremberg and the tenth in succession. Since the DTM series was revived in the year 2000, Mercedes-Benz drivers have won twelve out of 14 races staged at the Norisring (a win rate of 85.71%). Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz has now won 168 DTM races since first fielding a works team in 1988.

By finishing fourth, Gary Paffett (THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) has boosted his championship points tally to 95 and further consolidated his lead in the standings to 26 points ahead of second-placed Jamie Green. Paffett’s THOMAS SABO / Mercedes-Benz Bank outfit leads the team standings on 119 points, while Mercedes-Benz tops the constructors’ standings on 211 points.

A total of five C-Coupé drivers finished in the Top 10; apart from Green and Paffett, David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé) and Robert Wickens (stern AMG Mercedes C-Coupé) secured positions five, eight and nine respectively. Coulthard and Wickens achieved their best ever result so far in the DTM.


Roberto Merhi (Junge Sterne Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) was 13th, Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) and Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) did not finish.


Jamie Green produced the fastest race lap, 54.451 seconds. For race winner Green, this was the 13th fastest lap in his DTM career and his third this season. Since 1988, Mercedes-Benz drivers have posted the fastest lap in some 165 races, including 16 at the Norisring.


Overall,135.000 fans attended the DTM race weekend in Nuremberg (Fri, Sat, Sun).


Race summary


The start: The race begins on a wet track with two installation laps. Gary Paffett defends his pole position at the start but spins as a result of being rear-ended in a chain reaction going into the first turn and drops down the field to P22. Ralf Schumacher benefits from the situation and takes the lead. The safety car is out.
Lap 3: The safety car comes into the pits. Schumacher leads the race at the re-start. Jamie Green in P4, Christian Vietoris P5.
Lap 5: David Coulthard moves up into seventh position.
Lap 12: Schumacher extends his lead to 1.3 seconds. Paffett battles his way up the field into P15.
Lap 15: Paffett in P14 posts fastest lap so far.
Lap 17: Schumacher drops down to fourth place. Green moves up to third.
Lap 19: Susie Wolff is rear-ended by Adrien Tambay (Audi) and spins. She subsequently retires to the pits. Tambay is given a drive-through penalty for causing a collision that could have been avoided.
Lap 21: The pit stop window is now open.
Lap 23: Paffett goes up into tenth place and is now back in a points-scoring position.
Lap 28: Six C-Coupé drivers in the Top Ten - Green, Schumacher, Vietoris, Coulthard, Wickens and Paffett.
Lap 30: Lap 30: First mandatory pit stop for Vietoris.
Lap 32: Roberto Merhi, Green and Wickens come in for their first pit stop.
Lap 35: Coulthard pits from P7 to change tyres.
Lap 36: Edoardo Mortara (Audi) causes Merhi to spin.
Lap 40: Schumacher comes in for his first mandatory pit stop. Paffett now leads.
Lap 45: Schumacher has to retire in the pits.

Lap 75: Green overtakes Bruno Spengler (BMW) and is in second place.
Final lap: Jamie Green overtakes Martin Tomczyk (BMW) at the final turn and after 78 laps and a total distance of 179.400 kilometres wins the fifth race of the season at the Norisring. Gary Paffett comes home fourth just ahead of David Coulthard.

It’s my fourth on this track and also the tenth on the trot for Mercedes-Benz at the Norisring. So a fantastic day all round.“

„Congratulations to Jamie and Mercedes-Benz on their victory in this action-packed race. I got off to a good start but was rear-ended and so fell right back down the field. I was able to battle my way up into fourth place during the race which was brilliant, especially since I have now extended my lead in the championship.“


David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Fifth:
„Fifth place is a decent result for me. The fastest driver wins at this track and that was unfortunately not me today but nevertheless, I would like to congratulate Jamie on his fourth win at this circuit! That was truly an outstanding performance! As a team too, we achieved good results overall, especially in view of the difficult conditions.“


Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé), Eighth:
„I had a good race today, though the second pit stop was not brilliant. We took a bit of a risk and switched to slicks. Unfortunately, the rain came down harder after that, but the decision was the right one because if the rain had held off, then the strategy would have worked well.“


Robert Wickens (stern Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Ninth:
„I am immensely pleased to have scored my first DTM points. For a time, I was actually running fifth in the race, but then my tyres started to degrade and I dropped back to ninth. Even so, I’m very happy with my best DTM result to date, and I’m optimistic that further points will follow during the rest of this season.“


Roberto Merhi (Junge Sterne Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 13th:
„Today’s race was totally mad and the conditions were very tricky for everyone. I got away well at the start but unfortunately was hit by another driver subsequently during the race. I'm now looking forward to the show event in Munich’s Olympic Stadium which should be terrific for both drivers and spectators.“


Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), retired:
„What a pity, since the race began really well for me. I was in the lead, had a very good race pace and maintained P1 despite the tricky conditions here at the Norisring. Unfortunately, we had a technical problem and I had to retire – that can happen. An excellent result was a distinct possibility today, though.“


Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), retired:
„Unfortunately, my race came to an early end. I sustained damage to the front axle, right-side. An Audi driver then made me spin. I'm obviously very disappointed because a better result was on the cards, both in qualifying and in the race itself.“


Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:
„What a thriller – final lap, final corner, and Jamie Green finally nails it, victory! It’s the fourth time that Jamie has won here and the tenth consecutive year for our team, giving us twelve wins from the last 14 events.


The race started in the rain without a safety car, as I had feared, leading to a traffic jam on the first hairpin and a BMW driver who caused a chain reaction that saw the best-placed Audi, driven by Mattias Ekström, exiting the race and the race leader and championship leader Gary Paffett sent into a spin and consequently falling back to the very rear of the field. That Gary then still went on to finish fourth just shows his spectacular speed.

And Jamie had plenty of pace! What a stunning drive, especially on the last ten laps of what is our tenth victory in a row.

Ralf Schumacher was a prime candidate for a win until problems with electrics slowed him down. David Coulthard went up from P14 to 5, and we had five Mercedes AMG Coupés in the top nine places at the finish.

I would like to thank everyone in the crew; they have all worked really well and cut the mustard in fine style against strong opposition from BMW and Audi.

We’ll be doing a little celebrating tonight. We all deserve it.“

While surfing on different automotive website and car enthusiat forums, an intriguing message particularly draw our attention. According to an internal source cited by a registered user from GermanCarForum, the all new generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class luxury flagship could be officially unveiled only next year at the Geneva Motor Show in March, which coincides with a preliminary release of press details and photos during February 2013.

As with the future SLC AMG, we are once dealing with another unconfirmed tie-up. At least in the S-Class case, evidency shows many arguments against this rumor. The car is already in its final development phase, and a lightly covered series model has already been spotted during the pre-launch photo shooting. Furthermore, this month, the usual 7-year cycle of most Mercedes-Benz models will be complete for the current W 221 series of the S-Class which has been out in the wild since 2005. If these are not enough, several prestigious online publications have already given July as a certain period for the arrival of the new S-Class  based on solid proof and clear indication, with the world premiere scheduled for the Paris motor show this autumn.

We tend to believe this is another of those hoaxes in automotive industry which are desperately trying to distract the attention from an all-so-important event. Given the all-time trendsetter S-Class is concerned, Mercedes-Benz could be right at blaming the competition for this stupid rumor, if company execs would ever take position in the case.
