While the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has opened its doors to trade visitors from all over the globe, Mercedes-Benz is showing a premiere of a special kind: the integration of Siri, Apple’s intelligent assistant that allows drivers to get things done just by asking, into the new E-Class for its drivers using iPhone 4S.

To use Siri while driving, you only need to connect your iPhone 4S to your Mercedes using the "Drive Kit Plus" option. Once connected, you have access to all the important content on your iPhone 4S right on the vehicle's screen through the "Digital DriveStyle App" developed by Mercedes-Benz.

The Drive Kit Plus hardware and software will be available beginning spring 2013, so that Mercedes customers can use their iPhone 4S without taking their eyes off the road. A future version of the Drive Kit Plus option will support Siri Eyes Free mode.

Double premiere for Mercedes-Benz at the Detroit Auto Show: Launch of major model initiative

Having already reached sales of more than 13 million vehicles in its segment, the E‑Class will be celebrating its debut in its latest guise on 14 January at the International Auto Show in Detroit. Saloon, Estate, Cabriolet and Coupé models have all been completely revised and boast a range of exceptionally efficient engines, new assistance systems and a new design idiom. Of interest not only to the US market will be the E 63 AMG models, now available for the first time in a 4MATIC version as well. The new E-Class is the forerunner in the most comprehensive model initiative to date in the executive and luxury segment: joining the E-Class, with a world premiere towards the middle of the year, will be the new S-Class. The initiative is being flanked by the launch of the new four-door coupé, the CLA, which aims to broaden the appeal of the brand to attract younger customers. This car, too, will be celebrating its debut in Detroit and will shortly also be joining the product line-up in the US.

The new E-Class family sees numerous technical innovations for the first time, while it also demonstrates clear advances in terms of efficiency, ecology and dynamic driving. Taking the lead here, amongst other features, are a series of new and powerful BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines with direct injection technology, a new high-performance, high-torque and yet fuel-efficient six-cylinder unit, as well as even more efficient diesel engines.

All models in the E-Class family are equipped with either new or optimised assistance systems that will be found in the forthcoming S‑Class. They blend comfort and safety in a way that Mercedes-Benz calls "Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive" and include systems that, for the first time, make it possible to prevent accidents with crossing vehicles or pedestrians; Active Lane Keeping Assist, which can also help prevent accidents with oncoming traffic; and anti-dazzle continuous main-beam headlamps (Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus). All of which help to underline the pioneering role of Mercedes-Benz when it comes to safety.

The trendsetting engineering of the E-Class is also reflected in its design. This has been reworked in intelligent style by Mercedes-Benz and is thus now firmly embedded in the company's current design idiom.

Although the equipment and appointments packages have been significantly enhanced, the prices for the E-Class models remain at nearly the same level as for their predecessors. Some individual models are even available at a lower price than their predecessors.

More than 13 million vehicles sold in the E-Class segment

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Member of the Board of Management Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Sales and Marketing: "With more than 13 million vehicles sold, the E-Class segment represents one of the key building blocks of our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy. The launches of the new E-Class family and the S-Class during 2013 mark the beginning of our most comprehensive model initiative ever in this segment and once again set clear benchmarks in terms of safety, design, quality and efficiency. The letter "E" thus continues to represent the position of leadership in this demanding segment."

Worldwide sales of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon have reached some 11,250,000 units to date. Adding to this sales success are around 1,180,000 Estates, approximately 370,000 Coupés, 240,000 CLS and some 100,000 Cabriolets from the E-Class family. The Saloon model of the current E‑Class has been the vehicle of choice for some 600,000 buyers since its market launch in 2009, while the Estate model has found a home with around 100,000 customers over the same period.

The most successful Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon so far was the model series W 123, of which 2.4 million units were sold over the nine-year period that this model was built, from 1976 until 1985.

Over the years, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been the recipient of numerous awards for design, engineering, quality and innovations. The first half of 2012 saw the current model series add further significant awards to the list:

- In May, 5000 fleet managers voted for their favourites among the manufacturers and service providers represented on their fleets for the German magazine "Flottenmanagement" (Fleet Management). In the upper medium-size category the Mercedes-Benz E-Class took Silver, along with the "Flottina" Award.

- In June, the E-Class was revealed as the leading model in the executive luxury segment in terms of customer satisfaction according to the findings of the J.D. Power Study 2012, in a repeat of the previous year's result.

- Also in June, the specialist magazine FIRMENAUTO (Company Car), together with the independent expert organisation DEKRA, made the E-Class Estate E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, as the overall winner in the upper medium-size category, their "Company car of the year".

The new E-Class, which will be celebrating its world premiere at the Auto Show in Detroit on 14 January, continues on this successful course.

SPY: Mercedes-Benz begins development of the new 2015 MLC-Class (C 292)

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection
In 2015, Mercedes-Benz will start production for a new model series at the US-based plant Tuscaloosa, Alabama: the MLC-Class will be company's first-ever SUV coupe. Initial photos and details should be officially issued by mid-December 2014, with the official introduction slated for NAIAS Detroit the following year and the market release later on in spring.

Internally codenamed C 292, the new MLC sits on a modified ML-Class chassis. We expect the vehicle will be substantially longer than its brother and also more dynamic and refined. The development stage kicked off recently, with photographers spotting an entire fleet of W 166 test mules for the future SUV coupe being deployed in Germany along with some BMW X6 vehicles, whom the MLC-Class is directly aimed at. First real test prototypes, featuring a finished design hidden under the camouflage, could hit streets in about four months from now.

As seen from the spy shots, the rear wings on the ML models are modified to accomodate the new components of the MLC-Class chassis. The car will be standardly equipped with the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive traction, tweaked for best on-road performance and a sports ride. The ON & OFFROAD package with integrated management will be offered as an option, like for the ML and GL.

We cannot be very imaginative regarding the exterior design of the C 292. The tons of renditions that appeared since this model was rumored a few years ago might offer just a mild impression, miles different from the real car. Although it is not entirely a coupe (not if you count the number of doors), we expect Mercedes-Benz designers will deliver a spectacular exercise of style and elegance, paying a tribute to the 2-door models of the constructor into a very modern interpretation.

SPY: The 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive (W 242) spotted in the wintry Scandinavia

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection
Mercedes-Benz will launch the all-electric B-Class in 2014. The series car was previewed last year at the Paris motor show as a near-production concept vehicle. The provisional technical details indicate a total amount of power of 100 kW (equal to 134 hp) and a peak torque of 310 Nm fully available at the touch of the gas pedal. The constructor boasts the new B-Class Electric Drive can do almost 200 kilometres on a single "tank".

The forthcoming eco-friendly compact MPV under the Three-Pointed Star uses the modular ENERGY SPACE technical platform, that ensures an optimal integration of the rechargeable Li-Ion batteries right underneath the passenger cabin in order to counteract balance and dynamical issues due to added weight. "Refuelling" can be made at any domestic 230 V power supply or at a high-voltage 400 V rapid charge terminal, which takes under an hour.

The new electrically-powered B-Class is currently being tried out in cold weather conditions, somewhere in Northern Europe. The engineers are testing and evaluating the performance of the electric system that puts the W 242 into motion. It is particularly crucial to find out how the batteries can handle low temperatures and retain their "filling" as to not diminish the overall autonomy of the car.

2012 in review: Continued success for the Mercedes-Benz Museum

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection
Yet another year has ended successfully for the Mercedes-Benz Museum, which had 722,000 visitors in 2012. This means that the number of visitors has once again increased. More than one third of visitors came from abroad. Highlights in 2012 were the special exhibition "Timeless – 60 Years of the Mercedes-Benz SL" and the numerous Museum events during the summer. The S-Class will feature prominently in 2013.

"Achieving such good visitor numbers in 2012 after a very successful anniversary year in 2011 makes us very proud," says Michael Bock, General Manager of the Mercedes-Benz Museum and Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic. "In the six and a half years since the opening, around 4.9 million people have experienced the fascination of the automobile in the Mercedes-Benz Museum. I am very pleased that last year we were able to welcome even more international visitors than in 2011. This shows that our concept is working. In 2013 we will supplement our permanent exhibition of 160 automotive icons with special exhibitions on fascinating vehicles and – for a museum – unusual events such as the open-air cinema or an open day for disabled visitors."

Visitors from 171 countries

"The Mercedes-Benz Museum has long been a fixture for German tourists," Michael Bock continues. In recent years the number of international visitors has steadily increased: while only 15% of visitors in 2009 came from other countries, this figure has now more than doubled to 35%. In 2011 it stood at 27%. "In an international survey by the German Centre for Tourism, the Mercedes-Benz Museum was the only automobile museum to be voted amongst the Top 50 tourist attractions in Germany." The visitor statistics certainly reflect this.

In 2012 as a whole, China, the USA and France have again established themselves in the leading positions after German visitors. As in 2011, there has been a strong upward trend in visitors from China. There has also been a large increase in the number of Russian visitors. For the first time these have relegated visitors from Switzerland to fourth place in the Top Ten. The total of 171 countries of origin include surprising ones such as the Cocos Islands, Nepal or Qatar. In the record-breaking holiday month of July (easily the most busy month in 2012, with over 67,000 visitors), most of the visitors came from Germany, China, the USA, France and Spain.

"Whereas most visitors from other countries are usually visiting the Mercedes-Benz Museum for the first time, we benefit from a large proportion of repeat visitors," says Michael Bock. "The visitors tour the exhibition for an average of three hours. With our free audio-guide and extensive multimedia content we offer visitors up to 42 hours of information material in eight languages during the tour, therefore many return to quench their thirst for knowledge still further. Naturally many visitors come several times to attend events and special exhibitions, or repeatedly bring house guests to the Museum. Visiting Stuttgart without the automobile museum is hardly thinkable nowadays."

In 2012 the Museum was also able to match the results of the visitor survey in the anniversary year 2011, with visitors assessing the Museum with an average score of 1.5 (where 1 is the highest score possible). Precisely 98 % of respondents said that they would recommend the museum to others, and just under 90 % thought that their expectations had been exceeded.

Popular with tour groups and school classes

3500 guided tours were conducted in ten different languages in 2012. Apart from the classic tour of the automotive exhibits, the architectural tours, evening and children's tours were also particularly popular.

More than 6500 groups with just under 160,000 participants enjoyed the Museum as a shared experience, among them 1600 school classes with more than 50,000 students. More than 10,000 of these and their teachers took advantage of the "School in a Museum" feature in the GeniusCampus area for children and students. Many young visitors also found their way to the Museum in their free time: over 100 birthday celebrations were held for children, and well over 500 young people took part in the summer holiday programme "RoadSense". During this, 13 to 16 year-olds were, for example, able to drive a vehicle under supervision on an enclosed area.

Exhibition and event highlights in 2012

The year commenced with the special exhibition "Timeless – 60 Years of the Mercedes-Benz SL". During this, the Museum exhibited the full model series spanning six decades in the same room for the first time. This exhibition was attended by over 200,000 enthusiastic visitors during its course. This display covering the legendary SL sports car was succeeded by the special exhibition "Mille Miglia – Passion and Rivalry".

More than 140,000 visitors attended this special exhibition covering the Italian 1000-mile road race. For the first time the Museum showed models by competitors in addition to Mercedes-Benz models.

Special events such as the 6th anniversary of the Museum in May, World Children's Day in September or the Collector's Forum in November regularly ensured peak visitor numbers of up to 4800 per day. Last year more than 170,000 visitors experienced the Museum's summer programme, which included the jazzopen stuttgart, the Bertha Benz Days, the open-air Mercedes-Benz Lounge and the Social Media Nights Stuttgart. With more than 9000 spectators on 14 evenings, the open-air cinema also proved particularly successful as one of the major highlights in Stuttgart's event calendar.

The Museum also celebrated a minor anniversary in the autumn, with the tenth Mercedes-Benz Star Nights. The well-known chefs invited to this series of culinary events in the last four years have included regional stars such as Martin Öxle, Armin Karrer, Claudio Urru and Harald Derfuß, and the internationally active star-rated chefs Mansour Memarian (United Arab Emirates), Ludwig Heer (USA), Gerhard Schwaiger (Spain) and Dieter Koschina (Portugal).

With unusual facilities such as the Casino restaurant with its view of the local vineyards, between Silver Arrows and racing trucks, or the extravagant roof terrace, the Museum has for years been a very popular event location in southern Germany. In addition to the numerous public events, 180 customer events were also held on the premises of the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

Exhibition and event highlights for 2013

"Visitors can also look forward to an exciting event calendar for 2013. We have various new programmes in preparation aimed particularly at families and children – for example we will be holding a special workshop to mark the International Cartoon Film Festival", says Michael Bock. "Just how much young people are interested in our brand is, for example, evident from the 74,000 people around the world who follow us on Facebook, where we are one of Germany's most active museums."

The Mercedes-Benz Museum will be holding its first Star Nights in the New Year from 26 February to 10 March 2013 – with the top-chefs Mario Corti of Restaurant Luce d'Oro at Schloss Elmau and Derry Clarke, chef-de-cuisine at the Dublin gourmet restaurant l'Ecrivain.

"Coinciding with the market launch of the new S-Class, we will be illustrating the long history of this model series with a special exhibition from 4 June to 22 September 2013. For decades the flagship Mercedes-Benz model has set standards for the brand in terms of luxury, comfort and safety. And with the Week of Helpers (25 to 30 June 2013), one of the many highlights for the coming Museum summer in 2013 is already scheduled."
