The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT boasts enhanced driving dynamics and even better race track performance. With a maximum output of 435 kW (591 hp), the optimised AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission and the redeveloped AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension, the SLS AMG GT – which is available both as a Coupé and a Roadster – has raised the bar even higher. As a further highlight, the new high-quality AMG designo Exclusive STYLE leather is now also available as an optional extra for all SLS AMG models. According to Tobias Moers, Board Member and Head of Overall Vehicle Development for Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "The new SLS AMG GT demonstrates the sort of potential which lies in AMG's super sports cars. With its even higher levels of performance, the SLS AMG GT excites out on the race track in particular by providing an emotionally enjoyable and passionate driving experience."

Masculine and decidedly athletic: with darkened headlamps and tail lights as well as red-painted brake callipers, the new SLS AMG GT also features a unique look. The wing-shaped cross fins and the star recess in the radiator grille also retain a high-gloss finish, as do the exterior mirrors and the fins on the bonnet and wings. The AMG logo on the right of the boot lid also features the additional letters "GT".

One look at the technical specifications highlights the fact that AMG has succeeded in enhancing the dynamic profile of the SLS AMG GT even further. The maximum output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine is 435 kW (591 hp) at 6800 rpm, while the maximum torque is 650 Nm at 4750 rpm. The SLS AMG GT accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, and can reach a speed of 200 km/h in 11.2 seconds.

The key data at a glance:
Mercedes-AMG has achieved the output of 435 kW (591 hp) through in-engine dethrottling measures in conjunction with an increase in peak pressure. The GT version of the AMG 6.3-litre eight-cylinder front mid-engine responds with even greater agility to accelerator pedal movements and excites with even sportier-tuned performance characteristics. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7‑speed sports transmission located on the rear axle is more direct and spontaneous in the manual "M" transmission mode: thanks to newly developed gear change functions and optimised transmission control, it has been possible to shorten reaction time significantly. When changing gears manually via the real metal shift paddles on the AMG Performance steering wheel, control commands right through to the noticeable gear change are executed markedly quicker than previously – all of which is ideal when striving to achieve some ambitious lap times on a closed-off race circuit.

The reaction time experienced by the driver is made even more emotional as a result of more distinct gear changes. The automatic double-declutching function when shifting down is also more pronounced in the SLS AMG GT. Due to an increase in engine torque in manual mode, the shift procedure is even quicker than previously – and is accompanied by some passionate acoustic feedback for the driver. Overall, the optimisation of the dual clutch transmission complements the sporty nature of the SLS AMG GT perfectly.

New AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension

But it is not just the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine and the optimised dual clutch transmission which are responsible for increasing the driving dynamics of the SLS AMG GT. The newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension also enhances the vehicle's sportiness. In the case of the SLS AMG GT, Mercedes-AMG has combined the sophisticated suspension layout with twin aluminium wishbones all round and variable, electronically controlled damping. Compared with the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, the new AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension features basically stiffer spring/damper tuning and dispenses with "Comfort" mode.

"Sport" mode is recommended as the optimum setting for undulating road surfaces and routes requiring increased suspension travel – such as found on rural roads or the legendary North Loop of the Nürburgring, for example. The control algorithm of the AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension reacts best to fluctuations in the road surface with a tendency towards lower damper force levels. The resulting effect is the best possible performance by effectively preventing rolling and pitching and providing excellent contact with the road when adopting a sporty driving style. The enhanced driving dynamics and even better race track performance are measureable: as part of an internal comparison with the SLS AMG, the SLS AMG GT was able to achieve faster lap times on a race track.

"Sport plus" provides higher damping forces and features specific control algorithms which have been adjusted for a decidedly sporty driving style on routes with a level road surface - such as when trying to achieve ambitious lap times on a race circuit such as Hockenheim.

Selection of suspension modes via the AMG DRIVE UNIT

Depending on the driving conditions, speed and vehicle load, the AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension adjusts the damping characteristics at lightning speed and automatically reduces the roll angle of the body. The two modes can be selected via a button on the AMG DRIVE UNIT. The activated suspension mode is indicated by means of indicator lamps on the button and the display in the AMG main menu.

As standard, the vehicle comes with 265/35 R 19 tyres on the front and 295/30 R 20 tyres on the rear, fitted to weight-optimised AMG forged light-alloy wheels featuring a 10-spoke design and painted in matt black and with a high-sheen finish. Three additional AMG light-alloy wheels are also available.

Interior with consistently sporty highlights

The interior too features a consistently sporty design: the SLS AMG GT combines the high-quality, exclusive ambience of a true AMG model with the functional atmosphere of a racing car. The sports seats not only have an embossed badge on the head restraints, but the centre sections are also finished in Alcantara ® . Continuing the theme, Alcantara ® is also found on the door centre panels. The black interior appointments are combined with red seat belts, plus all of the contrasting stitching on the AMG sports seats, the centre console and the door panel lining is finished in red too. The floor mats also feature red edging.

The high-gloss black AMG trim on the centre console and door panel lining perfectly matches the high-gloss black edging on the adjustable cross-shaped air vents and the high-gloss real metal insert on the AMG Performance steering wheel with flattened lower section. The grip area is finished in Alcantara®, while the upper part of the steering wheel has a red 12 o'clock marking. The AMG instrument cluster is fitted with a black faceplate – at the top it also features an upshift indicator with seven LEDs.

AMG designo Exclusive STYLE leather for all SLS AMG models

Also now available for all SLS AMG models is a new, highly exclusive optional extra in the form of AMG designo Exclusive STYLE leather. This high-quality extra is available in single or two-tone finishes and comprises distinctive upholstery with a diamond design with contrasting stitching. The lavishly finished diamond design features not only on the AMG sports seats, but also on the door centre panels.

Other highlights include a designo leather finish for the entire dashboard, the beltlines and door armrests, the handrest on the centre console, AMG floor mats in black with porcelain leather edging, roof lining in Alcantara ® porcelain, and the parcel shelf (Coupé) or roll-over bar (Roadster). Seams finished in contrasting colours create exciting highlights and underscore the high-quality, hand-finished nature of this new leather package. Available colour combinations include mocha brown/porcelain, titanium grey pearl/porcelain and mystic red/porcelain. The colours of all of the elements of the interior appointment such as the roof liner, carpet and centre console are perfectly matched to each other.

Six SLS AMG models

The SLS AMG Coupé presented in 2009 was the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG. The spectacular gullwing model was followed in 2011 by the open-top SLS AMG Roadster as well as the SLS AMG GT3 customer sports racing car. Having secured 26 victories and the FIA GT3 European championship title, the SLS AMG GT3 was the most successful newcomer to the world of motorsport in 2011. With the new SLS AMG GT, available as a Coupé and Roadster, the model range has now grown to five variants. The sixth model is expected to follow in 2013 in the form of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL: Mercedes-AMG is planning an exclusive series-production run of the purely electric-driven super sports car.

The specific assembly area for the SLS AMG is located in the largest Mercedes-Benz production plant in Sindelfingen. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine comes directly from the AMG engine workshop in Affalterbach, where it is hand-assembled according to the traditional "one man, one engine" philosophy.

40 significant awards for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The SLS AMG has succeeded in winning numerous comparison tests against a host of international competitors conducted by the international specialist media – both as the gullwing model and the Roadster. Since its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 2009 and the presentation of the SLS AMG Roadster in May 2011, the super sports car from Mercedes-AMG has picked up a total of 40 awards – including such major prizes as the "German Design Award", the "Red Dot Design Award", the "Golden Steering Wheel 2009", "Classic of the Future", "Sports Car of the Year", "Best Performance Car" and "Legends on Wheels".

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection
A variant running on battery power alone is to be added to Mercedes-Benz's range of compact cars in 2014. Mercedes-Benz will be offering an initial preview of the electric future for the B-Class at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in the guise of the Concept B-Class Electric Drive. Similarly to the successful B-Class models with conventional drives, the concept vehicle combines a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience with full suitability for everyday and family use. The so-called "ENERGY SPACE" in the floor ensures that the concept vehicle offers the same generous and variable space inside as the current series production models. The Energy Space provides a safe and space-saving means of accommodating the lithium-ion battery and also has a positive effect on the vehicle's centre of gravity. The high-torque electric motor ensures that the local emission-free Concept B-Class Electric Drive is a lively proposition and guarantees hallmark Mercedes-Benz quality together with an enjoyable driving experience over a local emission-free range of 200 kilometres.

Local emission-free electric vehicles are a key element of the Mercedes-Benz strategy for sustainable mobility. The advances that the Stuttgart-based premium manufacturer has achieved in this field are demonstrated by electric passenger cars which are already being manufactured under series production conditions and demonstrating high everyday practicality today. Such vehicles include the B-Class F-CELL, the Vito E-CELL van and the smart fortwo electric drive. This broad product portfolio will be bolstered in 2014 by the addition of the battery-powered electric variant of the B-Class.

"In developing our electric vehicles we accord top priority to customer benefits," says Professor Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management at Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "Accordingly, the Concept B-Class Electric Drive demonstrates premium-standard electric mobility for all the family. The concept vehicle offers outstanding everyday practicality and great driving enjoyment."

Powerful acceleration and an effortlessly enjoyable driving experience

The near-series concept vehicle provides a glimpse of what the near future holds. Quiet and local emission-free drive power is provided by a 100 kW electric motor. Typically for an electric drive, the maximum torque of 310 Newton metres is available right from the first tap on the accelerator pedal – corresponding on a theoretical level roughly to the torque delivery of a state-of-the-art petrol engine with a displacement of three litres. This results in unusually powerful acceleration from a standing start. For the standard sprint from 0 to 100 km/h the electric-powered B-Class requires less than ten seconds. This adds up to superlative performance and all the joys of highly dynamic driving in every situation.

At a top speed limited to 150 km/h, the capacity of the highly efficient lithium-ion battery ensures a range of 200 local emission-free kilometres. This means that in addition to urban driving and short-range trips, longer journeys can also be mastered without any problems – such as the distances covered on a daily basis by commuters, for example. The Concept B-Class Electric Drive's battery can be recharged at any standard domestic 230 V power outlet. A rapid charging function is also integrated which enables sufficient energy for 100 km to be charged in under an hour.

While the car is on the move, the electric drive itself contributes to a favourable energy balance by transforming kinetic energy into electric current in deceleration mode and during braking and feeding this energy into the battery (recuperation).

Elegant and sporty lines

The powerful lithium-ion battery on board the Concept B-Class Electric Drive is accommodated safely and compactly in the so-called "ENERGY SPACE" under the rear part of the vehicle. This intelligent space concept ensures that the five-seater retains its familiar generously sized interior and boot.

In terms of appearance, the Concept B-Class Electric Drive showcar differs to series production B-Class models in a number of details. These include first and foremost a striking front bumper and new side skirts which flow elegantly into both the front bumper and the newly designed rear bumper. The charging unit is installed inconspicuously behind the filler flap. A special reflective blue colour effect on the exterior highlights the Concept B-Class Electric Drive's status as a local emission-free electric vehicle.

High-end comfort: exclusive interior

The range of instruments has been extended to cover functions specific to an electric vehicle. The round dial on the right incorporates a power display which is immediately and intuitively comprehensible, for example: the pointer rises when power is being consumed and drops below the zero line when the vehicle is feeding recuperative energy back into the battery. The instrumentation has been designed according to the motto "keep it clean", i.e. avoiding any unnecessary electronic gadgets which might distract the driver unnecessarily from the traffic.

Soft nappa is predominant inside the vehicle, covering steering wheel, seats, door centre panels, armrests and the dashboard, which is bordered with carefully applied decorative turquoise blue stitching. The passenger compartment is finished in black, white and crystal grey. The perforated seat centre panels and armrests are in keeping with the showcar's sporty, agile character. Special highlights are provided by fine piping in black, white and turquoise which provides a border for the light seat surfaces. The head restraints additionally sport an embroidered Electric Drive logo.

Connected services

Cutting-edge technology ensures that the Concept B-Class Electric Drive is not only sustainable, but also fully networked and online. Remote checking and remote configuration of the vehicle is possible via the so-called Vehicle Homepage. The driver can access their vehicle on the internet, using their PC or smartphone. In this way, it is possible to check the current charge status of the lithium-ion battery or to verify the vehicle's current range on a map. The planned route can also be displayed, showing directly whether and where the vehicle can be recharged along the way. The range of connected services is rounded off by a pre-entry climate control option offering individual timing. A further feature is smart charging. This involves the customer selecting a desired time for the beginning of his journey. The system then ensures that the battery is fully charged in time, taking economical and ecological considerations duly into account by using the most cost-effective or CO2-optimised charging times.

Big on safety

Mercedes-Benz attaches the same high safety standards to the Concept B-Class Electric Drive as apply to all the other series-produced vehicles of the MB brand. The very high safety standard of the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class provides the starting point. Thanks to the innovative "ENERGY SPACE", the battery is accommodated under the floor at the rear of the vehicle, enhancing safety in the event of a crash.

Paris Motor Show 2012: The all new Mercedes-Benz B 200 Natural Gas Drive - Saving the environment and your wallet

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection
With 16 percent less CO2 emissions, significantly cleaner exhaust gases than petrol or diesel fuel and around 50 percent lower fuel costs than a comparable petrol model, the new Mercedes B 200 Natural Gas Drive featuring, as its name suggests, a natural gas drive, has a lot to recommend it. The latest model in the successful B-Class family is due to make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show.

The B 200 Natural Gas Drive is the first B-Class model to make use of the "ENERGY SPACE" modular body concept: a partial double floor beneath the rear seat bench creates space to accommodate one large and two smaller natural gas containers, holding a total of 125 litres of natural gas (corresponding to approx. 21 kg). Thanks to this intelligent packaging method, the five-seater model is able to retain the generously proportioned luggage compartment for which it is known.

In natural gas mode, consumption of the 115 kW (156 hp) B 200 Natural Gas Drive is just 4.2 kg/100 km – corresponding to CO2 emissions of 115 g per kilometre. As a result, emissions are around 16 percent lower than those of the B 200 BlueEFFICIENCY with petrol engine, which offers equal performance. The new model belongs to efficiency class A and meets the EURO 6 emissions standard, which is not due to come into effect for all petrol-engined vehicles until 1st September 2014. But the model not only spares the environment – it is also good on the wallet: converting the consumption of the B 200 Natural Gas Drive into the energy equivalent of petrol, the price per kilometre comes out at around 50 percent lower than the fuel costs of driving a petrol model.

Performance is also on a similarly dynamic level: the B 200 Natural Gas Drive can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. The B 200 Natural Gas Drive works according to the monovalent+ principle. This means that its engine is basically operated using gas. For emergencies, there is a small 12-litre petrol tank on board. In the event that the gas tank should ever run dry, the vehicle switches over automatically, and imperceptibly, to petrol operation. And because drivers are not able to select petrol mode themselves, the B 200 Natural Gas Drive is taxed more favourably as a natural gas vehicle. The range in natural gas mode is around 500 kilometres.

The trip computer menu in the instrument cluster has been extended in the case of the B 200 Natural Gas Drive: the respective operating mode is displayed. In addition, a fill level indicator and remaining range are included for petrol mode. In gas mode, the driver has access to all of the regular trip computer functions.

Visually, the B 200 Natural Gas Drive also differs from other B-Class models in terms of a few details. Its main characteristics include the distinctive front bumper with strip-form LED daytime driving lights.

Vehicles fitted with natural gas drive are not only particularly environmentally friendly, they are also sustainable. This is because in addition to mineral natural gas, they can also be operated using biogas. Even synthetically produced gas can be used: this is produced using "excess" energy from solar power plants or wind farms, and in the future could help to resolve the storage problems encountered with alternative power generation. In this respect,
overall the B 200 Natural Gas Drive can be considered to be emission-free.

The B 200 Natural Gas Drive is celebrating its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show and is optionally available with manual transmission as well as the 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission. It is due to arrive in dealerships at the beginning of 2013.

Local emission-free electric vehicles are a key element of the Mercedes-Benz strategy for sustainable mobility. The Paris Motor Show will feature the world premieres of two additional models with electric drive: the Concept B-Class Electric Drive, which will be added to this broad product portfolio in 2014, and the fastest electric-powered series production vehicle in the world – the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive.

Also in the spotlight at the Mercedes stand in Paris will be the B 200 Natural Gas Drive, showcasing the Mercedes-Benz strategy for sustainable mobility. Other highlights of the appearance at this year's Motor Show include the new CLS Shooting Brake and the SLS AMG offensive featuring two new models. The sculpture "Aesthetics S" provides an idea of what form the design of luxury saloons might take in the near future. Another key attraction in Paris will be the new A-Class, which has enjoyed an excellent start.

Economical and low on emissions: the B 200 Natural Gas Drive

The new Mercedes B 200 Natural Gas Drive boasts a reduction in CO2 emissions of over 16 percent, markedly cleaner exhaust gases than with petrol or diesel and fuel costs around 50 percent lower than those for the comparable model with petrol engine. In natural gas mode, the 115 kW (156 hp) B 200 Natural Gas Drive runs on only 4.2 kg of fuel per 100 km – corresponding to CO2‑emissions of 115 g per kilometre. The so-called "ENERGY SPACE" in the floor ensures that both variants offer the same generous and variable space inside as the current series production models.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT offers enhanced driving dynamics and even better race track performance. Available in Coupé and Roadster variants, the SLS AMG GT raises the benchmark in decisive fashion once again, with a maximum output of 435 kW (591 hp), the optimised AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission and the newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension.

The CLS Shooting Brake is a further highlight in the long line of innovative luxury vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. While unmistakably coupé in its proportions, the five-door model opens up a wealth of new possibilities with a roof extending back all the way to the rear end. An extravagant touch without parallel in the automobile industry is the designo wood luggage compartment floor, which highlights the interior's hand-crafted character. For the American cherrywood luggage compartment floor, specially selected veneer sheets are glued and pressed by hand in five layers to attain a high level of dimensional stability.

The sculpture "Aesthetics S" provides an artistic vision of the design of luxury saloons in the near future. The aesthetics of the relief-like sculpture are combined with a fascinating projection. The resultant three-dimensional impression visualises the designers' creativity in vivid form. The modern production in three acts, developed by the designers at Mercedes-Benz, will be on show in Hall 1 at the Paris Motor Show.

Emphatically emotional in design, dynamic and highly efficient, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class opens up a new chapter in the compact segment. The newly developed A-Class chassis provides for refined sportiness, featuring a four-link rear axle, electro-mechanical power steering with assistance functions and ESP® with "Extended Traction Control" for all engine variants. The high-quality interior with soft-touch surfacing also follows the maxim
"The best or nothing".

Zero local emissions: Concept B-Class Electric Drive and SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive

"In developing our electric vehicles we accord top priority to customer benefits," says Professor Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management at Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. With the smart forstars, smart is continuing its series of clever concept vehicles and also offering a glimpse of the brand's future design idiom. smart's presentation in Paris will focus on the world premiere of the electrically driven two-seater that features an integrated video projector. Further new products that smart is presenting at the Mondial de l’Automobile are the special model smart fortwo edition iceshine and the dynamic smart BRABUS electric drive.

With the concept vehicle smart forstars the urban global brand is hitting the nerve of a target group that is at home in the cities of the world. The electrically driven smart forstars is an SUC (Sports Utility Coupé) with room for two people and plenty of stowage space. Its name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the glass dome above the passengers that gives a clear view of the starry sky. At the same time it hints at the witty idea of integrating a video projector in the front bonnet. This enables the work of film stars to be spontaneously shared with friends at any time.

The latest smart fortwo special model is the "edition iceshine", a vehicle combining a fresh and sassy look with chic equipment details. The vehicles in this limited series are available in exclusive azure blue or in white and will be rolled out to dealers in October 2012. The smart fortwo edition iceshine is available as a coupé or a cabrio, with a 52 kW mhd petrol engine or a 62 kW petrol engine.

The smart BRABUS electric drive proves that cutting-edge urban mobility can be combined with lively agility and a sporty look. The electric motor is based on the state-of-the-art drive technology of the new smart fortwo electric drive and has an output of 60 kW. It delivers maximum torque of 135 Nm, which means that the smart BRABUS electric drive almost always wins when pulling away at traffic lights. It has a top speed of 135 km/h. The new BRABUS sports suspension makes a decisive contribution to driving pleasure.

I. smart forstars: An amazing drive-in cinema experience

smart is reaching for the stars. With the concept vehicle smart forstars the urban global brand is hitting the nerve of a target group that is at home in the cities of the world. The electrically driven smart forstars is an SUC (Sports Utility Coupé) with room for two people and plenty of stowage space. Its name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the glass roof above the passengers that gives a clear view of the starry sky. At the same time it hints at the witty idea of integrating a video projector in the front bonnet. This enables the work of film stars to be spontaneously shared with friends at any time.

The smart forstars will be premiered at the Paris Motor Show 2012. The show in the trendy French capital is a local affair for smart as the brand's production facility is located in Hambach, Lorraine. The colour of the expressive coupé is also a reference to the venue of the world premiere. It is painted in the extravagant colour "alubeam rouge" that creates an appealing contrast to the matt metallic titanium colour of the tridion safety cell. And thanks to the 60 kW magneto-electric motor from the new smart BRABUS electric drive, the zero-emission smart forstars is agile and lively.

smart boss Dr Annette Winkler says: "The smart is Europe's most inexpensive series-produced electric car. Not only is it emission-free and fast, it is also possible to conveniently set the perfect interior temperature in advance with a smartphone, and it is simple to charge at a domestic socket. What's more, with its powerful battery and integrated projector the smart forstars can transform any grey backyard into an animated open-air cinema."

The compact smart forstars (length/width/height: 3550/1710/1505 mm) is therefore not only a mobility concept with ample space for two people and a generous cargo area under the glass tailgate, it is also a communication concept that needs no more than a free house wall for a spontaneous cinematic experience. The media player of the projector integrated in the front bonnet is operated via Bluetooth® from an iPhone®. A high-quality sound system with additional loudspeakers in the ventilation openings behind the doors enables the drive-in cinema experience to be perfected for friends as well.

The exterior design: sassy and friendly with extremely short overhangs

The smart forstars is immediately recognisable as a member of the smart family, yet it also boasts striking new features – and not only its silhouette offers a look at smart's future design idiom. It greets the viewer with a saucy smile on its friendly yet assertive face.

The rhombic design of the front and rear lamps is very striking. Outer rings illuminate the indicators and daytime running lamps with a large number of LEDs. The lamps seem to push outwards like arrows – like drips on the cockpit window of an aeroplane as it takes off.

The "eyebrows" above the front headlamps are just one of many of the lovingly created new details. They give the headlamps a new U-shaped look. The transparent red sun visor above the windscreen takes up this idea and lends the coupé an even more squat road stance. The tail lights can even be opened. The charging socket for the high-voltage battery is found inside the right-hand tail light, whilst the left-hand one has space for a beverage can.

The study has a longer wheelbase than the current smart fortwo (2470 mm/plus 603 mm) and a wider track (front 1475 mm/plus 193 mm, rear 1475 mm/plus 90 mm) and these also emphasise the confident look. At the same time the extremely short overhangs at the front and rear make it exceedingly compact. All four wheels have been positioned at the outer corners of the body – a typical smart feature.

The smart forstars shares the main features of its body with the smart for-us, which caused quite a stir at the Detroit Motor Show at the beginning of the year. The smart forstars, too, features convex and sensuously shaped body surfaces. The large brand emblem is proudly sported on the grille, and the front has a pronounced three-dimensional design. Where rally cars have an air scoop on the bonnet, on the smart forstars a video projector is integrated here as an ironic highlight.

There is a convex glass coupé roof above the passengers' heads. It joins seamlessly with the glass cover over the cargo area which opens upwards. Like the smart for-us, the lower tailboard at the rear can also be opened electrically. To start with, the tailgate slides down in a parallel position, then the cargo floor including tailboard retracts by 280 mm. The cargo on the 900 mm cargo area is then extremely easy to access.

Shiny black trims that continue below the side skirts draw attention to the wheel cutouts. The smart forstars rolls on Michelin sports tyres measuring 245/35 ZR 21. The wing nut covers of the three-spoke wheels are an attractive detail.

The sporty, sassy character of the smart forstars is also emphasised by a striking and technically very complex red alubeam finish. "Alubeam rouge" has a wet look that provides an exciting and very modern contrast to the matt and distinctly metallic appearance of the titanium-coloured tridion cell.

The interior: stylish, uncomplicated and individual

Sleek, taut surfaces in mother-of-pearl white combined with precisely designed technical functional elements in brushed aluminium – the interior is characterised by contrasts. The colour "alubeam rouge" that is also used as an accent colour in the interior creates a link to the exterior.

Stylish, uncomplicated, highly functional and easy to individualise – the two seats in the concept car are typically smart. The seat shells, which are open in the middle, are covered with a soft fabric throw giving them a hammock-like seating feel. The graphic elements and different red tones of the covers indicate a progression and thus underline the dynamism and the very trendy aspect of the vehicle.

As the covers can be removed in next to no time, simple individualisation with other throws is conceivable. Practical: when the seat cover on the passenger side is removed, long items can be loaded through the seat of the smart forstars.

The seats are trimmed with high-quality white bag leather with exquisite white piping. Perforated leather in the door panelling forms a further sophisticated contrast and emphasises the high quality of the materials used.

Like the smart forvision and the smart for-us, the whole cockpit boasts aerodynamic styling for interior ventilation. The control and display elements are oriented to the driver. Just as the cockpit module divides the instrument panel, the two-spoke steering wheel is open at the top.

In place of a conventional rear-view mirror the smart forstars features a smartphone accommodated in a holder at the top of the windscreen. The driver can see what is happening on the road behind with the help of an integrated video camera. The smartphone also serves as a media source and controls the projector.

Stowage compartments to the left and right of the high-quality cargo area fitted with aluminium rails offer additional stowage space.

Electric drive – driving fun with zero local emissions

The electric drive of the smart forstars is based on the innovative drive concept of the smart fortwo BRABUS electric drive. Compared to the production model of the smart electric drive the output of the magneto-electric motor has been increased to 60 kW, giving the smart forstars agile and lively performance. With 135 Newton metres of torque it boasts powerful, lag-free acceleration and can overtake other vehicles with the greatest of ease. The vehicle has a top speed of more than 130 km/h and the lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 17.6 kWh.

II. smart fortwo edition iceshine: All white, or sky blue?

The latest smart fortwo special model is the ‘edition iceshine’, which combines a fresh, cheeky look with chic equipment details. The first vehicles in this limited series available in white or exclusive azure blue will be rolled out to dealers in October 2012. The smart fortwo edition iceshine is available as a coupé or cabrio, with a 52kW mhd petrol engine or a 62kW petrol engine.

Other exclusives include the white alloy wheels, with their new 3-double-spoke design and wide tyres in size 175/55 R15 (front) and 195/50 R15 (rear). III. smart BRABUS electric drive: ordering starts 27 September: More e-power!

smart is expanding its portfolio of zero-local-emission cars to include the particularly dynamic smart BRABUS electric drive. Like the production model, the uprated variant is available as a coupé and a cabrio.

Electric driving pleasure à la smart plus an extra portion of driving dynamics. That's the smart BRABUS electric drive that can be ordered from 27 September. Its powerful electric drive is based on the technology of the new smart fortwo electric drive, but it delivers more of everything. For example, peak power output of 60 kW and maximum torque of 135 Nm which, in conjunction with a more agile response to the accelerator pedal in the sports programme, provides for noticeably better acceleration. The bundle of power achieves the sprint from 0 to 60 km/h that is relevant in inner cities in just 4.4 seconds.

"The smart BRABUS electric drive is our sports car with a green heart", says smart boss Dr Annette Winkler. "Electric driving in the city is more fun than ever with short bundle of power." The same applies outside city limits: the smart BRABUS electric drive sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.2 seconds and with a top speed of 130 km/h it is also a little faster than the basic model. And despite the enhanced performance it has the same range of 145 kilometres (NEDC).

Dynamic and distinctive appearance

The smart BRABUS electric drive also has a particularly dynamic look. Like the BRABUS Xclusive vehicles, the smart BRABUS electric drive is available all in black, white or silver. Dark BRABUS headlamps, BRABUS "Monoblock VII" alloy wheels (16" at the front and 17" at the rear) and BRABUS Xclusive aerodynamic body styling parts complete the sporty look. Numerous BRABUS Xclusive components accentuate the exceptional position of the electric two-seater. These include the instrument panel and interior door trims in leather optic, leather seats, stainless steel sports pedals with rubber nubs, BRABUS hand-brake handle, BRABUS dashboard instruments (battery charge indicator and power indicator), and the BRABUS sports steering wheel with rocker switches for manual battery recuperation (incl. sport programme). A special rear apron insert with double reflectors rounds off the sporty look.

BRABUS is offering the "electric green style package" as an option. The tridion safety cell, door mirror caps and BRABUS front flaps come in electric green, the radiator grille is painted in the bodypanel colour, and interior accent trim parts and contrast components also come in electric green.

All electric smart customers can also opt to make their vehicles even more individual and can choose from an almost unlimited range of colour and material combinations offered in the smart BRABUS tailor made programme.

"Like all smart BRABUS vehicles this smart also follows our philosophy of more style, more power and more exclusiveness", says Bodo Buschmann, CEO of the Bottrop customiser BRABUS. "Our smart electric drive version appeals to customers who attach importance to environmental friendliness and also want even more sportiness and exclusiveness."

Electric power from any socket

With the optional rapid charging function the empty battery of the smart BRABUS electric drive can be fully recharged in just an hour. Charging at a wallbox takes around six hours in most countries and seven hours with electricity from a domestic socket. smart will offer wallboxes in future in cooperation with SPX, one of the world's leading suppliers of technology solutions in the fields of energy and automotive as a global installation and service partner, and with KEBA, a specialist for innovative E-charging infrastructure and wallboxes.

Always know how far you can go: smart BRABUS vehicle homepage

As with the smart fortwo electric drive, the smart drive app can also be supplemented with functions tailored to the smart BRABUS electric drive. The current state-of-charge and the SmartCharging charge configuration can be controlled and managed via a web portal from a home computer, a tablet pc or with a modern smartphone.

What's more, the vehicle homepage offers every smart fortwo electric drive customer a chance to visualise the range on an interactive map with 3D views. The nearest public charging stations can also be seen at a glance. If a desired destination is further away than the available range the vehicle homepage can be used to quickly check how long the battery still needs to be charged for to reach it. Among other factors, the depiction of the range considers the topography and the route profile.

The intuitive graphic depiction that can be combined with 3D views and satellite images is a particularly attractive feature. Furthermore, the vehicle itself can also become active: information on the state of charge and range can be sent by email or Twitter message, for example. The driver is notified as soon as the desired range can be reached with the current charge.

Intelligent charging

The smart BRABUS electric drive can be connected to the internet at home via a standard powerline adapter (Homeplug AV) for SmartCharging. After entering the planned departure time in the vehicle or the web portal the vehicle will be fully charged in a battery-saving and economical way. Public charging is very straightforward. With Plug&Charge the vehicle identifies itself as soon as it is plugged into a compatible charging point and the charging process is settled automatically.

Completely carbon-neutral and zero-emission motoring with renewable energy

In Germany all new smart fortwo electric drives (BRABUS and standard model) will be completely carbon-neutral. Daimler will additionally provide as much "green" electricity as all new smart fortwo electric drives and smart BRABUS electric drives sold in Germany consume – without support measures from the Renewable Energy Act.
