REPORT: The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet nearly greenlighted for serial production

The new S-Class generation will be revealed this year at Paris. A crucial model for the future growth of the German brand, the luxury flagship will also act as a replacement for the discontinued Maybach. The Mercedes-Benz portfolio in the top premium segment will comprise more diverse versions, among which we mention a Pullman executive saloon, a 4-door coupe and, for the first time in history, a soft-top cabriolet model.

Intentions to build an open-top S-Class became pretty clear after Mercedes-Benz launched the Ocean Drive Concept study in 2007. At that time, many speculated the new body variant will receive the CL moniker and become effective starting with the premiere of the facelift range of the luxury 2-door. However, it was not the case, as costs and global opportunities would not have been favourable for producing this new model.

Following the decision to axe Maybach from 2013, Mercedes-Benz will have to fill the gap left by the missing brand. We have often talked about the intentions to construct a solid lineup around the new S-Class (W 222) and now there's information the cabrio model is almost approved for entering the series production. Despite initial reports, the final car will no longer feature the 4-door architecture of the concept, but stick to a traditional 2-door layout. Set to arrive in 2014, one year after the forthcoming S-Class Coupe is introduced, the luxury open-top will boast an overall length of over 5.1 meters, a classic fabric roof instead of a tin top and only high-end V6, V8 and V12 petrol-functioning powerplants.
