When we first said the new-generation 2013MY E-Class Facelift will give up the quad headlight design in favour of a clean, sharper single-lamp styling, feelings were mixed. All in all, at some point in the future, it would have happened, so better late than never. The revamped 212 series will become aggressive and sophisticated thanks to the new LED headlights, whose finished design has been recently depicted in a photo that emphasizes an uncovered piece.

Since he took control over the design department at Mercedes-Benz, Prof. Gorden Wagener has master-minded a styling revolution for the German brand. You either love it or hate it, but the Star is looking for a more coherent, solid, both organic and progressive philosophy. The best way to achieve that is to experiment various possibilities, so the current products from Stuttgart might look rather busy and inconsistent when it comes to pure aesthetics. The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Facelift (W/S 212), coming spring 2013, is part of the ambitious plan.

The section that best describes a car is its face. The more intricate it is, the more attractive it becomes. The four eyes have been a hallmark for the E-Class design since 1995, but nowadays they might have finished lifecycle and could look dated. The new single-unit headlamps are a breath of fresh air and substantially give the E-Class FL a new, powerful attitude. The key visual element are the two thin strips using diffuse LED technology, that enhance the overall look and seem to be a pair of captivating eyebrows. Some might be tempted to say they have already seen this styling exercise on the other side of the road, at rival BMW, famous for its rounded Angel Eyes. But that could easily only a simple coincidence and nothing else more.

The new lights will also incorporate the necessary technology for the Night View Assist Plus system, which uses an infrared beam sensor used to read the road ahead in dark conditions. Most probably, the basic E-Class lines will not receive LED light system, but the high-end variants will certainly get this beguiling design trick for their "eyes". The 207 model series, comprising the Coupe and Cabriolet versions of the E-Class, will also get the same treatment, but the headlight shape will be slightly different and arched over the front wing.
