Mercedes-Benz is unveiling dynamic reinforcements for its on-going model initiative in no fewer than three vehicle classes at this year's first European motor show. "The A 45 AMG is stretching the boundaries of its segment, the CLA defines a whole new one and the new E-Class is raising the bar in its own neighbourhood again," states Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "All of these cars show you where Mercedes is heading. And they underline that we intend to get there in the fast lane."A 45 AMG: output of 360 hp with fuel consumption of just 6.9 l/100 km
The A 45 AMG, which celebrates its world premiere in Geneva, sets new standards in the high-performance compact class. It combines its superior peak output of 265 kW (360 hp) and maximum torque of 450 Nm with appropriately low fuel consumption: just 6.9 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres. Furthermore, the engine already meets the requirements of the Euro 6 emissions standard.
The compact premium sports car's two-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine boasts a specific output of 133 kW (181 hp) per litre of displacement – a new record – meaning that the A 45 AMG surpasses even the most powerful super sports cars. Its standard-fit performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive ensures driving dynamics at the highest level and, thanks to excellent traction, enables the car to complete the burst from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.
Mercedes-AMG is embarking on a new era with the A 45 AMG. The attractive entry-level model, available from €49,682.50 (incl. VAT) in Germany, will capture a new target group and new markets for the Affalterbach-based performance brand.
The new E-Class: top business class with consumption starting at 4.1 l/100 km
The extensively modernised E-Class model family – Saloon, Estate, Coupé, Cabriolet and the likewise new E 63 AMG – is celebrating its European premiere. These models see Mercedes-Benz injecting new impetus into one of its key market segments on five fronts. The new E-Class leads the way in terms of safety, drive systems and design in particular.
"The new E-Class is the best E-Class of all time and one of the reasons why we are very optimistic for the remaining year. And we expect to see further sales growth, especially in the course of the second half of the year. Even more so, because some of our newcomers have not arrived in our showrooms yet," says Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Cars, responsible for Sales & Marketing.
The updated design reflects the embodied state-of-the-art technology. The front end sports a completely new design featuring new headlamps with a single lens covering all functional elements. The E-Class Saloon and Estate are also available for the first time with two different faces – featuring the classic star on the bonnet or the sports car radiator grille with a large, centrally positioned star.
Exemplary safety with eleven new assistance systems
All the E-Class models feature many new assistance systems from the future S‑Class. A total of eleven of these electronic aids reconcile comfort and safety in a new dimension. The comprehensive "Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive" concept includes systems which for the first time can help to prevent accidents with crossing vehicles or pedestrians, and Active Lane Keeping Assist which can help to prevent accidents with oncoming traffic.
Powerful and efficient engines
The new E-Class family has likewise been further enhanced in terms of efficiency and ecology thanks largely to new, powerful BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines with direct-injection technology, enabling the E-Class to achieve an 'A' efficiency rating. The wide range of engines includes six petrol and six diesel units, all of which are exceptionally efficient. The petrol versions cover the output range from 135 kW (184 hp) to 300 kW (408 hp), their diesel counterparts from 100 kW (136 hp) to 195 kW (265 hp). Almost all of the diesel engines have an 'A' efficiency rating. The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, which consumes a mere 4.1 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, even achieves the top 'A+' rating.
Most powerful E-Class: the new E 63 AMG with up to 585 hp
The Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG represents the pinnacle in terms of performance and dynamism. The flagship model in the E-Class family is now also available as an exceptionally powerful S-Model with a maximum output of 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm of torque. It is equipped with a newly-developed performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Permanent all-wheel drive is also available as an option for the other E 63 AMG models.
The new CLA-Class: individual with avant-garde coupé design
Also in the spotlight at the Geneva show is another attractive year-2013 model in the shape of the new CLA-Class. Dr. Zetsche: "Premium is not a question of size. You can think of the CLA as the CLS's little brother. You just can't deny their common DNA."
The new CLA is the youngest car in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio in many respects. This four-door coupé is aimed at winning Mercedes-Benz new customers. The elegant model with frameless doors is individuated by its sporty proportions and powerfully dynamic design idiom. Inside the car, integral seats in the front and rear reflect the tone set by the progressive, dynamic exterior.
Highly efficient engines and variable all-wheel drive
In keeping with its sporty positioning, the CLA is available with highly efficient four-cylinder turbo engines developing up to 155 kW (211 hp) and 4MATIC all-wheel drive; thanks to fully variable torque distribution, this system offers high traction reserves, exceptional agility and optimum handling safety.
Technical highlights include a new aerodynamics world record for production cars – achieved by the CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Edition with its cd value of 0.22. Outstanding safety comes courtesy of numerous driver assistance systems, including enhanced COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system, both of which are fitted as standard.
