Some exciting action was captured recently on the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit as a camouflaged prototype of the soon-to-be-unveiled A 45 AMG had a bad day after its driver lost control of the car and smashed it into metallic walls of the track. Safe and sound, he managed to get out of the car on his own two feet and call for assistance. The A 45 AMG, however, suffered some important injuries. The cause of the accident, which took place during a testing session, was the excessive speed that led to the loss of control. Both front airbags deployed at the moment of impact, meaning the desired level of protection in case of an incident was fully ensured. Moreover, the car's fascia and rear end, as well as the underlying technical components, were severely damaged. Due to the shock in went true, the A 45 AMG prototype ceased to function and had to be hauled onto a truck for it to be carried to the Mercedes-AMG labs for further analysis.
Most probably, the test vehicle was loaded with precise measurement instruments, that may have recorded substantial data during the accident, which can be used to improve the model before it goes on sale in 2013. All in all, this type of road incidents are not seldom when testing a pre-production car. The risk of catching fire aboard, of having major technical problems or a crash always hides around the next corner. The skilled engineers are the ones fully responsible and perfectly trained to handle with these situations and minimize, if possible up to zero, the chances and effects of them.
A quick reminder: The new Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG features a newly developed all-wheel-drive powertrain for an increased level of dynamics and safety and boasts a new, 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline unit that produces a peak output of around 350 hp. The new sports hatchbacks will be officially presented to media and public at this month's Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris, kicking off on 27th September.
